My 80lb dog ate a container of melatonin relax treats. Is he okay?

That is quite a large dose for a dog that small. While it may just make Max very drowsy, it is best to seek out care ASAP in the event of a large dose or if Max is acting ill. Signs to watch out for include vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy/confusion.

Fortunately even in very large dosage Melatonin is not considered to be life threatening in dogs, you may expect significant sedation with Django but he isn't in any serious danger, the effect should wear off within 12-24 hours.

A one time ingestion of this higher dose wouldn't be expected to cause any toxic effects. Your dog may be a little sleepier than usual. If he develops any other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, extreme lethargy or weakness then seek veterinary care.

I think the worst that will happen is some mild GI upset like vomiting and/or diarrhea - both of which should be self-limiting (meaning they should go away on their own within 48 hours). If they don't, then he needs to see a vet. He may be more tired than normal but not comatose so if he is sleeping and you can't get a reaction out of him then you need to get him to a vet ASAP. I recommend no food for 8-12 hours but be sure he has plenty of water available. These treats don't really contain anything toxic at large doses but remember, every dog reacts differently to medications/supplements just like people so if, at any time, you are worried about him you need to have him examined by a vet.

In general a dose of 50 milligrams (mg) of xylitol per pound of body weight (which is 100mg/kg) considered toxic. Xylitol will cause rapid release of insulin which causes a rapid and profound decrease in the level of blood sugar (hypoglycemia), an effect that occurs within 10-60 minutes of eating the xylitol. Untreated, this hypoglycemia can be life-threatening. Signs of hypoglycemia may include: vomiting, weakness, lack of coordination, difficulty walking or standing, lethargy, tremors, seizures and coma. If your dog ate toxic amount take him to the vet ASAP, if not yet showing signs induction of vomiting may be done and if there are signs he will need immediate treatment. With melatonin there are some conditions where it is given to dogs again at the right dose. again more information about the dose is crucial here. I also have no information about your dog body weight but small dog will normally treated with 1 mg tablet and medium dog 1.5mg. Hello, thank you for your question about Maggie. Based on my research on these chews I do not believe that Maggie will experience any significant side effects. The chews contain natural calming substances such as B vitamins, etc. You are correct in that she may experience some stomach upset. If you do notice that she becomes quite sedate/lethargic or is having difficulty walking I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian. Hope this helps!
