My dog ate Lisinopril. Is human blood pressure medicine toxic to dogs?

My mom’s blood pressure medicine (Lisinopril 10mg) spilled and my 13lb pup ate one pill. Do I need to be worried or take her to see a vet?

Hi,
Lisinopril is used in the treatment of both heart failure and hypertension (high blood pressure) in dogs. In dogs required the drug the safe dose is 0.5 mg/kg which in the case of 13 lb (6.5 kg) puppy that would be 3.25mg which makes 10mg an overdose.
Overdose may cause lethargy, increased heart rate, vomiting, and hypotension (low blood pressure). Seek veterinary care immediately. If it has happened less than an hour ago the vet may be able to induce vomiting. If not he will need to be monitored and supportive care depending on signs.

Lisinopril is a medication that is used in dogs and cats. Depending on your dog's weight, the ingestion of a 10mg tablet may or may not be cause for concern. To be totally safe, have your dog seen by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. Either can induce vomiting via injection to get the pill up and out. This is most successful when done within 2 hours of ingestion. Alternatively, you can call the Pet Poison Helpline ( https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/ ) for more specific information. You will need to provide your dog's weight and they will let you know if there is cause for concern. There will be a fee for this call.

Fortunately, Chomper is a big dog, so the 10-20mg (I assume milligram rather than milliliter?) of lisinopril is unlikely to cause any significant issues. However, to err on the side of caution, it would be best to call the ASPCA animal poison control center (888-426-4435) to verify. Overdoses of lisinopril can cause hypotension (low blood pressure), vomiting, lethargy and elevated heart rate.

Hello. Lisinopril is indicated for proteinuria in dogs, but I can not just tell you to give this to her. I do not know her overall health & this can make a tremendous difference when giving medications. My dog accidentally ate enalapril. What symptoms should I watch for?

The dose for dogs is 0.5mg per kg. Enalapril comes in 2.5mg tablets so did Charlie eat 2.5mg or 0.25mg? If he only at 0.25mg he probably will have no ill effects. If he ate 2.5mg then he could have some side effects. Things to watch out for: low blood pressure, increased urination, decreased appetite, vomiting, sudden lethargy or weakness.

This is actually a quite safe dose and should not cause severe side effects as long as Jet is not taking any other medication and is healthy otherwise. It can cause lower blood pressure and increased urination. I would monitor him for the next 12-24 hours and if you notice any abnormal sign like no urination, increased thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy (and any other sign), I would recommend an immediate check up.

My chihuahua ate my high blood pressure pills. What should I do?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm very concerned that Sony could become markedly hypotensive (very low blood pressure) after taking these pills. Given that he is a chihuahua, the mg/kg dose that he ingested is most likely a VERY large overdose and could be fatal. I recommend attempting to make him vomit as soon as possible by administering hydrogen peroxide to him orally. You may give him a teaspoon (you may have to use a turkey baster to help get it in his mouth) to try to make him vomit. If he does not vomit after 10 minutes, you may try giving him another teaspoon. Ultimately if this is unsuccessful, I recommend bringing him to your nearest emergency veterinarian as soon as possible. That way, a veterinarian can use medication that is injectable to induce vomiting. He/she can also administer medications to try to reduce absorption of this medication and prevent it from having its dangerous effects. Again, I am very concerned about Sony. I hope this is helpful.
