My dog ate a leather belt. What symptoms mean an urgent vet visit?

I am not sure what you are describing that he ate. Signs of GI obstruction can include vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, decreased appetite, abdominal pain, etc. If you see these signs, Midnight should be examined by a vet right away.

At this stage feeding bulky food and monitoring is the best way to go. Signs of intestinal blockage are obvious and you will be able to notice them right away. Dogs with a blockage go off their food, vomit and show abdominal pain. They become weak and lethargic. What is also very important, dogs with a blockage are not passing any stools (soemtimes they try to pass but they are not able to). So, for now keep any eye on your dog and if you see any of these signs get in touch with your way right away. He is a large dog, so there is a good chance that he will pass the piece of leather in his stools.

It's difficult to know for sure without knowing the size or type of object ingested, but it's definitely a concern for causing an obstruction in the stomach or intestines. If she ate it within the last three hours, then it's possible that it can be retrieved from the stomach if you take her to the vet. This may require anesthesia and special instrumentation though, so it would be expected to be somewhat costly - especially at an emergency clinic. This is the best option though. The other option is waiting to see if it passes OK. Normal GI transit time is 3-5 days. During this time you would just be waiting to see if she has any signs of an obstruction. Signs of an obstructions are vomiting, not defecating, acting very painful/depressed and a decrease in appetite. This is most successful when done within 2 hours of ingestion.

Vomiting and inappetence can occur from many conditions such as foreign body ingestion and obstruction, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. I am concerned that he could be showing signs of an obstruction which is something that requires therapy which sometimes includes surgery. I recommend that you have Jager evaluated by a veterinarian at this point for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start him on medications to make him feel better. Oh no, that's not good that Boone ate your laces. Hopefully these will pass without problem, but there is a chance they could become stuck in his GI tract and cause a linear foreign body. I would monitor him for signs of obstruction, which include vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, and lethargy. Should you see any of those signs, I would take Boone into the vet right away. If the laces becomes stuck, he will need surgery to remove them.
