My 5-month-old lab ate Hydroxyzine and Cymbalta. What should I do?

Animals can show signs of toxicity after ingesting 1.5 mg per kilogram of body weight and Hunter may have ingested over 7 mg per kg. I would be concerned about the potential for serotonin syndrome secondary to this medication. It could cause agitation, high heart rate or blood pressure, muscle tremors or seizures. I would recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian to discuss treatment. Attempting to induce vomiting might be recommended if he ate the pill recently, but it can be difficult to get cats to vomit. Otherwise the recommended treatment would probably be IV fluids and monitoring in the hospital.

Hi there. So sorry this happened. Unfortunately there isn't anything you can do at this point unless you want to take him to a vet for IV fluids and supportive care which may help to flush the drug out of his system sooner. Also, if he starts to show any clinical signs they can start treatment right away. Side effects it can cause in animals: agitation, vocalization, tremors and seizures. There is not studies with this drug and birds so you have to extrapolate the data from dogs/cats and those are the side effects for them. No one knows what will happen to a bird after ingestion. You cannot make ducks vomit but you can rub the crop area and see if he will regurgitate - this will only work if he just recently ingested the pill. Again, so sorry this happened. Duke is 80lbs, so about 36.4kg. He ingested 0.55mg/kg of Lexapro. With doses as low as 0.3mg/kg, you can see incoordination and lethargy, although there is typically no toxic damage to organs. To be safe, if Duke ate the Lexapro within the past 2 hours, I would take him to your vet now to induce vomiting. If it's been longer than 2 hours, you will have to monitor him for signs of toxicity (tremors, incoordination, seizures, lethargy), and if you see any of those signs, take him to a vet right away.

Hello. At that dose & with a single acute ingestion, I would not expect to see anything in the dog or older cat. But if the kitten ingested the 20 mg, then you may see symptoms of serotonin syndrome. This could include vomiting & diarrhea, & neurological signs such as ataxia or incoordination while walking, agitation, tremors, mild seizures, vocalization, disorientation, or even sedation & lethargy. You could take the smallest cat to your veterinarian for possible decontamination, or just keep a close watch on everyone for any concerning signs I have mentioned. Any treatment now will be purely supportive. Monitor for vomiting, jaundice, lethargy, increased respiration and anemia. Liver and kidney function should be checked via blood test to rule out damage from the dose of acetaminophen ingested. Further supportive care may be indicated if liver/kidney function is compromised. This may include IV fluids and blood transfusions if indicated.

Oh my goodness, I hope at 5 months old Zia is not already 100 pounds! That would very overweight even for a Mastiff. Abilify can cause low blood pressure, sleepiness, and depression or lethargy - but it has not been shown to be a highly toxic drug, thankfully. If the ingestion occurred right now you can try to induce vomiting with hydrogen peroxide. The dose is 1cc per pound of body weight. If the ingestion happened several hours ago, there is likely to be no benefit in inducing vomiting - rather, a veterinarian would only be able to manage any symptoms that were noted. If all seems normal, there may not be any immediate concern - but if you are seeing sleepiness, lethargy, depression, or pale gums, you need to seek veterinary attention immediately.
