My dog ate human Montelukast and is now sick. What should I do?

You may see some vomiting or diarrhea. If you would like a more definite answer I would call the ASPCA poison control hotline at 888-426-4435 where they have more experience with pets eating human medications. This is a rather big overdose, but this drug is relatively safe to overdose. Signs of an overdose can be vomiting and muscle tremors. If you don't see any of these after eight hours, then she will be fine. If you do see vomiting and tremors, then it's best to take her to the vet for treatment and monitoring. It's most likely that she will be OK. Just check on her every so often and make sure she has plenty of water available. I hope that helps and Abby gets better soon.

Hi! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Katie just ingested a very high dose of meloxicam. The big problem with an overdose of meloxicam (or any other NSAID) is that it can definitively result in side effects such as gastrointestinal ulceration (which may manifest as black, tarry stools which basically means digested blood), kidney disease, liver disease and gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting, diarrhea and anorexia. I advice that you take Katie to a veterinarian (perhaps a bit farther from you) for evaluation and further treatment. If it has been less than 2 hours, vomiting could still be induced which could make the outcome better. If there is no way possible you can do that then take her first thing in the morning tomorrow. It sounds like Princess may have eaten something naughty (trash, toilet paper, paper plate, sock, toy stuffing, other) that decided to come back up. The fact that she has shown no signs today is promising. If she has eaten and kept it down, you are likely in the clear. Caveat: Do watch her closely for the next 2-3 days because if a smaller piece of whatever it was did get through and gets lodged in the intestine, you'll see lots more vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, etc. If this happens, it's time to see the vet. I'm very concerned that Sony could become markedly hypotensive (very low blood pressure) after taking these pills. Given that he is a chihuahua, the mg/kg dose that he ingested is most likely a VERY large overdose and could be fatal. I recommend attempting to make him vomit as soon as possible by administering hydrogen peroxide to him orally. You may give him a teaspoon (you may have to use a turkey baster to help get it in his mouth) to try to make him vomit. If he does not vomit after 10 minutes, you may try giving him another teaspoon. Ultimately if this is unsuccessful, I recommend bringing him to your nearest emergency veterinarian as soon as possible. That way, a veterinarian can use medication that is injectable to induce vomiting. He/she can also administer medications to try to reduce absorption of this medication and prevent it from having its dangerous effects. Again, I am very concerned about Sony. I hope this is helpful.

It sounds like Princess is unwell. She could have a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, a foreign body, or pancreatitis. I see that she is unspayed, and an infection of the uterus called a pyometra occurs in unspayed dogs and causes these symptoms. For now, I recommend monitoring her. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, and then feed her boiled white meat chicken and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. If she keeps that down, you can slowly add back in her normal diet. Monitor her closely for signs of a pyometra, such as more vomiting, her belly becoming swelling, extreme lethargy, and discharge from her vagina. You can also take her temperature to monitor for fever, which would be above 102.5F. If you see any of those signs I mentioned above, take her into a vet immediately. In addition, if the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomiting the bland diet, she develops diarrhea, she stops drinking water and start vomiting water, or she becomes very lethargic, take her into your vet right away.

Hi there! Since Primo is 84 pounds (about 38 kilograms), 150 mg of Deramaxx would be a dose of about 4 mg/kg. This is within the approved label dosing range for this medication for short-term use, so it's unlikely that you will see any serious side effects related to this - especially since you were able to make him vomit within about an hour, so he probably vomited up at least part of the medication before it was fully absorbed. With any higher-than-normal dose of Deramaxx, it's always possible to see GI issues such as stomach upset or even gastric ulcers - so I would recommend monitoring Primo closely for the next few days to make sure that he's acting normal. If he has repeated episodes of vomiting (more than once or twice), doesn't want to eat, or begins acting lethargic, then I would recommend taking him to the vet right away to be checked out. If he normally takes Deramaxx daily, I would also recommend calling your regular vet in the morning to let them know that this happened - they may recommend skipping his normal dose for the next day or two to help minimize the risk of any problems.
