My dog ate a household chemical. What emergency steps should I take?

Ideally, Pepe should be seen by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. In addition to the potentially toxic chemicals in the wipe, it may pose a risk of obstruction. Your veterinarian can induce vomiting via injection to get the wipe up and out. This is most successful when done within 2 hours of ingestion. Any longer and the wipe could move out of the stomach. If it blocks, this would be a surgical issue. Pepe may need medication to calm an upset stomach afterwards. A bland diet may also be recommended for a few days.

If you suspect your pet ingested meth, please take her to your nearest emergency clinic right away for life saving treatment. It is unfortunate that this happened outside of your supervision, but the most important thing is to make sure that Gizmo is going to be ok. I would recommend taking Bailey to your local veterinary ER. These types of products can be quite irritating to the gastrointestinal tract and also have the potential to be toxic in other ways. The vet will do a thorough physical exam and look for any obvious symptoms. They may also recommend you contact the pet poison hotline to gather more information regarding treatment depending on the severity of the symptoms. At the least you can expect to be prescribed some medications to help protect Bailey’s stomach and intestines from the irritants in this product. She may need IV fluids and intensive hospital management if she develops significant gastrointestinal symptoms. Good luck, I hope Bailey comes through this ok.

I know this is a very worrying time for you, but you did completely the right thing in taking the dog to the vet so quickly. If you had him vomit within 40 minutes then the majority of the gastric contents and the noxious substance will have come up. Sometimes I would also administer activated charcoal but it isn't strictly necessary when they vomit a good lot up. The medication that the vet gave you will help to line the stomach in case the substance has damaged the lining, the other medication is a liver support as it deals with a lot of potentially toxic substances. There really isn't much more you can do aside from being vigilant. If you knew exactly what the dog ingested sometimes other drugs can be administered such as vitamin k in rat poisoning. However your dog should be absolutely fine considering how quick you acted. You could feed Blue some liver as it helps with regenerating red blood cells etc. Best of luck, if you have any concerns at all please ask!

While there is not an antidote, there are medications that can help with the symptoms that are simply not over the counter. For that reason, it is recommended that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to examine him, gather more information and decide how to treat him next. I am hoping for a speedy recovery!

I’m assuming your dogs are having muscle tremors or fasciculations. If so there is not much to do at home - a veterinarian would treat with muscle relaxants, IV fluids and potentially medication to control seizures. You may need to travel to get care for your dogs. If the muscle tremors are relatively mild there may not be lasting side effects, but if they are severe then muscle damage, kidney failure or even brain damage is possible.
