My dog ate wrapped candy. What should I do about the wrappers?

No they should pass ok. I would feed them so the wrappers get through the intestinal tract with the food. If they start vomiting or won't eat or do not pass stool the I would take them right in for an exam and X-rays. As long as they are acting normally it's fine to watch them and wait. Fortunately, these small wrapers do not easily cause blockages, but unfortunately there is nothing that can be given to prevent a potential blockage. It's also not advised to give anything like a laxative, because this can be dangerous in a potential blockage. The only thing you can do is wait to see if it passes OK. Normal GI transit time is 3-5 days for such things. During this time you would just be waiting to see if she has any signs of an obstruction. Signs of an obstructions are vomiting, not defecating, acting very painful/depressed and a decrease in appetite. If you notice these signs, then Betty would need to go to the vet immediately for emergency surgery.  I hope that helps and all is well with Betty.

If this happened recently, ie within the past 2 hours or so, you should take him to a vet for inducing vomiting. If this has been longer then you need to watch your dog for a tummy ache, diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, as he could get pancreatitis from the food he is not used to. Also the wrappers could cause trouble. Watch his feces, wrappers should show up as they pass through the intestinal canal. If he shows any signs of discomfort, please take him to a veterinarian or Pet ER.

There is nothing else you need to do except feed him only boiled rice and chicken for the next day or two if you can, as the wrapper may have irritated his esophagus/stomach going down and a bland diet is always recommended when there is Gastrointestinal irritation to help the GI mucosal lining heal. It’s great that he vomited up the wrapper as it is no longer a risk for an obstruction in his intestines. Just monitor for normal eating, drinking and activity level but call your veterinarian if he continues to vomit, especially within 1/2 hr after eating, doesn’t pass normal stool within 2 days while on only boiled rice and chicken, strains to defecate, or has diarrhea. Both candies contain chocolate, but not that much and Jim is a big dog so I am not expecting Chocolate toxicity in his case but it could cause vomiting, diarrhea and constipation, you will need to keep an eye on his stools in the next few days.

Hi, if the wrapper has been thorn into pieces it will probably pass through his gastro intestinal tract together with other food. If it was a large piece swollowed as whole, there is the risk of obstruction and you need to monitor him closely for any vomiting or diarrhoea or straining to go to the toilet or abdominal pain. At his size, he should be able to pass it in the next 24-48 hours. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or straining to defecate. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.
