My dog ate freeze-dried raw food left out for 7 hours. Is she okay?

Hello. There should be no medical problems with the raw meat, although Leia may not be interested in eating for a while. It is also possible that she could throw this up as it is a rather large amount to eat in one sitting. Otherwise, she should be just fine. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Zelda may not get sick from the pork. If the meat wasn't rancid or spoiled then she could digest it with out any issue. Raw pork can contain food born pathogens like toxoplasma, but signs of that may not develop for months. There is nothing you can do for that in the short term. If she just ate it you could contact your Vet to discuss inducing vomiting to remove the raw pork. We are unable to provide instructions on inducing vomiting. Otherwise I would just watch her. If she shows signs of vomiting or diarrhea I would fast her for 12-24 hours and feed a bland diet of boiled chicken breast or hamburger and mix with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. I wish you the best!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I’m not panicking about Scar and I don’t think you need to rush to the ER. But here’s a couple things to watch for. My main concerns for Scar are gastroenteritis (inflammation of the stomach and intestines) and less likely, an infection like campylobacter. Gastroenteritis is marked by a small number of vomiting episodes followed by a few days of diarrhea. Pretty much as soon as the vomiting is done, Scar should be acting like herself (happy, active). She should be eating normally by 12 hours after the vomiting stops. If/when the diarrhea comes, that should be the only sign- no lethargy, loss of appetite, etc. This all usually takes care of itself in 2-4 days. An infection from the raw meat could be a bit more serious. Vomiting or diarrhea may be more profuse, she may not want to eat for an extended period of time, may have a fever or noticable lethargy. If you’re seeing this, it’s time to head to the vet for fluids and medications to help with the nausea and diarrhea. And of course, some dogs surprise me and have no signs at all. Hello. Raw foods are not always the safest diets to feed because of bacterial contamination, but if Boris is otherwise feeling well, then I would not panic. Normally, I recommend keeping a vomiting dog that acts well & drinking & holding down water, off food for 12-24 hours, & restart with a bland diet of 25% boiled chicken, 75% cooked white rice or a little low fat cottage cheese. But for now, just keep him off his regular food & give him just a very small amount in 12 hours. If he continues to vomit during this fasting period, or he becomes lethargic or develops diarrhea, then it is time to see the veterinarian. I hope he is feeling better soon. Good Evening...thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Well, it looks like Amara just ate part of your dinner...bad doggie! Amara should be just fine. :-) From the picture, it does not look as though the pork chops contain bones. She may experience GI upset as a result, and this could include vomiting once or a loose stool for a day or two. As long as Amara is not vomiting persistently (more than 2-3 times in a 24 hour period), her appetite continues to be good, and she does not develop bloody diarrhea or diarrhea that persists more than a couple days you should be in the clear...

While it's not ideal for your dog to eat canned food that has been sitting out for this long, in my experience it's not likely to cause any serious problems - dogs have very acidic stomach acid, which gives them a greater tolerance for eating rotten or spoiled things. It's possible that Dayz may have an upset stomach (vomiting or diarrhea) from this, but unless the food was visibly moldy, I would not expect her to have any other serious problems. If she has vomiting or diarrhea lasting more than 24 hours, it would be best to have her examined by a vet to make sure that nothing more serious is wrong.

I would watch Joshie for anything abnormal, such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, abdominal pain, panting, etc. It may be no big deal, but if she does develop symptoms she should see a vet for treatment.
