My dog ate thawed pork chops from the counter. Should I be concerned?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Zelda may not get sick from the pork. If the meat wasn't rancid or spoiled then she could digest it with out any issue. Raw pork can contain food born pathogens like toxoplasma, but signs of that may not develop for months. There is nothing you can do for that in the short term. If she just ate it you could contact your Vet to discuss inducing vomiting to remove the raw pork. We are unable to provide instructions on inducing vomiting. Otherwise I would just watch her. If she shows signs of vomiting or diarrhea I would fast her for 12-24 hours and feed a bland diet of boiled chicken breast or hamburger and mix with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. I wish you the best!

The problem with raw chicken and raw pork is that they may be contaminated with certain detrimental bacteria. So monitor your dog for diarrhea and vomiting. Should this occur you can try the following: I would fast Alley for 24 hours and then put her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, it needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

Dogs will be dogs! As a veterinarian, I always recommend to my clients not to allow their pets to consume any cooked bones. As you have already intimated, these tend to break up into shards or splinters, leading to potentially disastrous consequences. It certainly sounds like the pork Sargent consumed is not agreeing with him in one way or another. Two episodes of vomiting by itself is not terribly many. However, if you note continuing vomiting throughout the next few hours, I would absolutely recommend seeking medical attention. In addition to a bone splintering and causing physical damage to the GI tract, theses types of foods have also been known to cause pancreatitis. The clinical signs of this condition will include lethargy, vomiting, and unwillingness to eat. Another thing to look out for over the course of the next several hours will be any blood in the feces. A small amount of blood in the feces is not very concerning, but any amounts of pooling red blood is a definite cause of immediate concern. If you do choose to take your dog to the vet, it is highly likely they will want to take some x-rays to see if it appears the bones are passing through the GI tract. They are also able to run blood work to determine if pancreatitis may be brewing. Should they determine things are looking OK, your vet may want to administer some medications to help calm the gastrointestinal system and prevent further vomiting.

If it happened in the past hour I would recommend heading to an emergency vet - they can potentially take an x-ray and determine whether or not it would be worthwhile to attempt to induce vomiting. If the bone was sharp or very large there are risks to inducing vomiting so it may not be worthwhile. Unfortunately I find that pork bones in particular can cause obstructions or constipation. If the vet decides there is too much risk to inducing vomiting they may prescribe some medications to help protect the stomach or a diet change while monitoring closely for any vomiting, decrease in appetite, or difficulty defecating.

If Zoey was able to swallow the food and water, I don't think the pork chop bone would be stuck in her throat. It could be upsetting her stomach. Keep a close eye on her, and if she is still acting this way in the morning, have her seen by a vet. Take her into a vet immediately if she starts vomiting, there is blood in her vomit, blood in her feces, she has diarrhea, stops eating, or becomes lethargic. I hope this helps!

The good news is, there is nothing about a BBQ pork sandwich that is inherently toxic to dogs so you don't need to worry about that :) I would say that your dog will probably be just fine - you may see some stomach upset, such as mild vomiting and/or diarrhea for the next 24 hours or so since his system is probably not used to food like this. Occasionally, a serious illness like pancreatitis could result from eating something this kind of table food, so I would recommend taking Hershey to the vet if he has vomiting/diarrhea lasting longer than 24 hours, or if he becomes very lethargic or doesn't want to eat.

Most small bones will be softened during digestion in the stomach. They can usually pass without an issue, however fatty or salty meats can irritate the intestinal tract causing problems like pancreatitis. I would monitor Nana for signs of vomiting,diarrhea or abdominal pain and have her seen by your veterinarian if noted.
