My dog ate fish oil pills. Will she be okay? What should I do?

My 45 lb dog got into my fish oil pills and ate about 25-30 of them. Will she be ok?

If it has been less than 2 hours since your pet ingested the foreign material, you can induce vomiting by giving an oral dose of hydrogen peroxide, about 1 cc per pound. One tablespoon is about 5 cc. A turkey baster will work if you don't have a syringe. Longer than two hours and it will have already moved into the intestines.

Generally, even without the induction of vomiting, your dog is likely to have diarrhea and other intestinal upset from eating so much fish oil at once. Be aware that one of the effects of fish oil in the body is to act as a blood thinner. I have seen dogs ingest much more than your dog did and do fine, but if your dog becomes lethargic, loses her appetite, starts vomiting, please get her seen by your vet right away.

Hello, and thank you for your question. Ingesting a small amount of oil and fish from a pan should not cause any serious problems. At most I would expect to see a bit of diarrhea or softer stools for about 24 hours afterwards. You can try offering a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice during this time, to help minimize any stomach upset caused from eating the rich foods. If Daisy starts vomiting or has diarrhea that worsens over 24 hours, I would suggest taking her to a vet, as occasionally eating very rich foods can cause pancreatitis which is more serious and requires additional medications and care. My dog ate 1/4 of an omega 3 pill. Will he be okay after this?

Omega 3s are used in dogs as well, and the amount he got is actually what I would prescribe for his size, so it should not cause any problems. However, some dogs are sensitive to starting omega 3s and will develop some loose stools, however with a one time dose I think even that is unlikely. Best and luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

What to do if my dog ate too many calming pills or supplements?

If she just ate them (within the last 30 minutes or so) then you can induce vomiting with hydrogen peroxide - 2 tablespoons. Hopefully she will vomit them up. If it has been longer than 30 minutes then you should take her to the vet. She may have no side effects or she may have some GI or neurological symptoms. There is no way to predict how a certain animal will react.

My 19lb dog ate a human prenatal vitamin with DHA. Is she okay?

Since she only ate 1 pill, I would not be worried about toxicity. The doses in the vitamins for each of the components should not be harmful. You may see some GI signs such as poor appetite, vomiting or diarrhea, but should resolve. If symptoms continue, I would recommend taking her to your veterinarian.

I am sorry to hear about Benson! I would recommend called the Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661 https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/ to discuss Benson's ingestion. They have resources available to them to determine if your dog has ingested an amount of the accutane that could cause toxicity and require emergency treatment. The omega 3 pills will likely cause GI upset/diarrhea that may need symptomatic treatment, but the accutane could potentially cause a toxicity and may require emergency treatment. They will calculate the toxic dose for the dog and determine the treatment that should be given (if any is needed).

It depends on the size of the dog and the amount she ate, but chances are good that, unless she ate several pounds of M&Ms, she will likely only end up with a sore belly and possibly diarrhea. If she ate them less than 1 hour ago, you can induce vomiting by giving an oral dose of hydrogen peroxide, about 1 cc per pound. One tablespoon is about 5 cc. A turkey baster will work if you don't have a syringe. Longer than an hour and it will have already moved into the intestines. Ideally, your pet should be seen by your veterinarian to ensure that she will be okay. Your vet will do an exam and possibly bloodwork to determine if any further treatment is needed.
