My dog ate expired medication and is staggering and lethargic. Help!

You don't mention how many tablets he ate, or how much he weighs. Like all toxicities, Imodium toxicity is dose-dependent, meaning the severity of signs is related to how much was ingested. Dosages of 1.25 – 5 mg/kg can cause vomiting, depression, and salivation. The best way to help him is to get him in to see a vet who can give drugs to control nausea and administer activated charcoal to absorb the rest of the drug in the GI tract. Fluids will likely help him feel better as well.

If your dog does not start showing improvement after 48 hours of being on the medication and/or if his symptoms persist, then you should take him back to your veterinarian for a recheck. He may need additional diagnostics like blood work, X-rays, and/or a parvo test (depending on his vaccination status). He may also need supportive care like nausea medication and fluid therapy. It can cause irritation or ulcers in some cases. This could be the cause of her lethargy today. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian as soon as possible to have her evaluated. She could even be experiencing an unrelated coincidental issue such as neck and/or back pain as this is common in small breed dogs. Poor Luna! She may benefit from intravenous fluids. Have you veterinarian check some bloodwork to see if her liver or kidneys were affected. You may also ask your veterinarian if pain medication would be beneficial. Without being able to examine Luna myself, it's difficult to know how best to advise you. That is about double her dose for her weight. It can cause constipation and abdominal cramping. I would try to feed her canned pumpkin and canned food to make sure she gets enough water to help prevent constipation. If you notice any blood or her straining then I would see a vet.

If the entire intact pill was in the vomit you probably don't need to worry and she may be tired after vomiting. If it seemed to be punctured or partially dissolved then there might be a chance for toxicity depending on what type of DayQuil it was and what the active ingredients are. If it was punctured repost your question and either take a picture of the box or list the active ingredients.
