My dog ate a dead frog, now at vet. What are his chances of survival?

I'm sorry to hear about Pochay! I'm not familiar with the specific frogs in your area, but in my area frog ingestion usually causes mild GI upset (vomiting, diarrhea) and can sometimes cause neurological symptoms such as transient seizures. In both cases, we offer supportive care so it would be helpful to know what signs of illness you're seeing in Pochay that make you concerned she's been poisoned. If you're seeing mild GI upset, you can offer her bland food (white rice with cooked chicken breast) in small amounts until her symptoms subside, and encourage lots of fluids by adding extra water to her rice/chicken. Fluids will help flush irritating toxins from her body. If you're seeing neurological symptoms, she should be seen by a vet, to provide fluid support until she's feeling normal enough to eat

If the toad was toxic, you’d see symptoms such as head shaking, severe drooling, and pawing at the mouth and eyes almost immediately. Because it’s been 10 minutes since Max picked up the toad, I would suspect it’s not poisonous. I would not rush him into the ER vet, but keep an eye on him to be safe. Rinse her mouth with cool running water for at least 15 minutes. Keep her head tilted downward to prevent aspiration of water. It is likely there is not enough toxin to cause serious toxicity. Monitor for weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, disorientation or seizures. Treatment is largely symptomatic. See your veterinarian if Shirley develops any of these symptoms.

Certain toads (Marine Toad or Colorado River Toad) can be toxic if bitten of ingested. You should rinse Ash's mouth out with cool water for at least 15 minutes. Monitor for excessive drooling, redness or swelling in and around her mouth, increased heart rate or ataxia (wobbly gait). Frogs are less toxic than toads and may cause nothing more serious than some drooling and minor stomach upset.

Many frogs have a bitter toxin on their skin. When a dog touches it with their mouth, they foam trying to get the toxin off. Flush your dog's mouth copiously with water in an attempt to wash off the toxin. Sometimes, the toxin can absorb and cause other issues, like lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, dilated pupils, etc. If you see these symptoms in Brownie, she should see the vet as soon as possible.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Xander! I am so sorry Xander is so ill from ingesting a toxic toad. There is no antidote for these toads. Once they ingest the toxin it is just supportive care until the toxin is out of the system. In some cases the toads are deadly. I suggest Xander be hospitalized if he is not improving and it has been 8 days. He should be in IV fluids and his seizures need to be controlled with medications. The toxin can cause electrolyte abnormalities that can cause heart arrhythmias and they can be in a lot of pain. I hope this helps and I wish Xander the very best!

I'm sorry to hear Duchess may have had contact with a potential toxin. Not all frogs and toads are dangerous to dogs, but the ines that secrete toxins on their backs are. I would rinse her mouth out immediately with copious amounts of water, and then contact your regular veterinarian or local poison control to see if further action and decontamination is required.
