My dog ate a dead cat on the road. What should I do to keep him safe?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yuck! Well if Maxie ate any of it she will likely vomit. If she is acting fine I wouldn't worry. If she vomits fast her for 12 hours and start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. He will not be the first nor the last dog to eat a rotten carcass or meat. I wish you the best!

You might want to go on a bland diet of boiled/boneless/skinless chicken breast and boiled rice in small frequent meals for the next few days as a preventative. Best of luck with Chewy!

I would just monitor him for any signs of illness such as inappetence, vomiting, diarrhea and/or lethargy. If any of these are observed, have him evaluated by a veterinarian. Hello. Other than the possibility of either dog vomiting up the bones in the middle of the night, they probably will be fine. Bones, while not recommended to be fed, will be digested. If this was a large carcass, like from a deer or cow, a dog can consume enough bone to either cause a blockage of severe constipation. But since this was a much smaller critter, I see no problems. Disease/parasite problems are nil, but may be a very small possibility. If your dogs are on a broad spectrum heartworm preventative, they are covered for parasites, otherwise a good wormer would not hurt. Watch for any signs of abdominal discomfort, prolonged diarrhea, inappetence or vomiting that lasts longer for a day or so, but if there are no issues, the bones will be gone in the next 12-18 hours. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Unfortunately, dead animals can transmit bacterial infections and various parasites. I recommend keeping a close eye on Buddy for vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite. Pieces of bone or hair can cause intestinal blockages which result in similar signs. If Buddy exhibits any of the signs above, he should be seen by a vet right away. I hope all is well!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Pizza in and of it's self is not toxic. If there was an excessive amount of onions then maybe. Otherwise one of 2 things may happen: 1) Nothing! 2) Molly develops vomiting and/or diarrhea from an upset stomach or pancreas. It isn't wrong to feed her a bland diet for a few days. Boil chicken breast or hamburger and mix with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. I hope this helps and I wish Molly the best!

Poor Mocha. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.
