What happens if my dog ate a piece of copper pipe? Is it toxic?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 18 lbs

Please help.. I think my dog ate part of a copper pipe? I’m guessing it was about a third of an inch long and a quarter inch wide. Is she going to die from this?! I’m freaking out!

This is a potentially serious problem. A piece of copper may cause copper toxicity which can damage the liver or be fatal. Inducing vomiting may be dangerous, so that decision should be left up to your veterinarian. An abdominal x-ray can be taken to confirm or rule out an ingestion. If Kalli did swallow a piece, it should be removed as soon as possible. This may require endoscopy or surgery.
