My dog ate a cooked lamb bone weeks ago. Why is he not normal?

Dietary indiscretion, eating things they shouldn't, can cause stomach and intestinal pain, vomiting and diarrhea, and pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is painful. If there was a bone with in the steak then yes, that could be why he is experiencing abdominal pain. When dogs experience pain their behavior can be very odd: run around like something bit them, clingy, doing the downward dog or prayer position, act lethargic, shake, pant. The best thing for D, since he is showing signs of pain, is to have him seen today by your Vet before the weekend. They may wan to take belly X-rays to be sure the bone is breaking down and isn't stuck. Otherwise I would fast him for 12 hours then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. If he won't eat or starts vomiting he needs to see a Vet. I hope this helps and I wish D the very best!

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You need to monitor your Dolbie for the next 24-48hrs. Bones usually are digested in the stomach but they may form gastro-intestinal obstruction or cause constipation. If Dolbie starts to vomit, strain to pass faeces, is passing stools with blood or not passing any stools at all for longer than 24hrs, you will have to take him to your local vets right away. If after 48hrs he does not develop any symptoms, it will mean that he is out of danger.

Hi, thank you for reaching out about Duke. These types of bones twist and turn as they go down the digestive tract. Many times they do not cause any problems, however they can get stuck at any given point (in the esophagus, stomach, or intestines). At this time I would watch him closely at home over the next 24-48 hours. If any vomiting, regurgitation, "coughing" - possible bone stuck in esophagus, or decrease in appetite occurs please have him seen right away by his veterinarian so they can assess if the bone is stuck. If he continues to have a normal appetite and normal behavior at home, most likely his body is digesting the bone without any problem. Oh no, it's not good your aunt gave Kiba sheep bones! It's a good sign that he is eating, drinking normally, and seems fine on walks. I would monitor him for now. Should he start vomiting, stops eating, stops drinking, has diarrhea, has blood in his feces, has blood in his vomit, or becomes constipated then I would be extremely concerned and have him seen by a vet immediately. These are signs of an obstruction and perforation of the intestinal tract, and it is a medical emergency. Should that happen, Kiba would need surgery. I understand being concerned about this lethargy, and if it continues over the next 48 hours, I would take him back into the vet for an exam. I hope this helps :-)

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In general, if there hasn’t been a problem for 48 hours, you’re in the clear. Continue feeding Indy as usual. If there is some diarrhea but Indy is still eating and playing and active, im still not terribly concerned. But if vomiting starts or you’re seeing lethargy or loss of appetite, it’s time to head in to the vet as soon as possible. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Indy!

It is not good to give your dog bones, especially poultry bones as they can shatter and cause obstructions or irritate/injure the GI tract. If November has eaten bones and is now showing signs of illness (not eating, moaning in pain, seeming in distress) it would be best to seek veterinary care ASAP for an exam.

If he is acting normal and eating well, then I would not take him in yet. You should continue to monitor him for any vomiting or diarrhea, lethargy or decrease in appetite. These are signs of an infection which he may have been exposed to from the bone.
