My dog ate a cooked chicken bone. Will it dissolve or pass safely?

Hello. If Pie seems to be fine, then I would not worry. Most times the bone will be easily digested & pass on through. If he should develop any vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, hard bloated abdomen, or loss of appetite, please have him seen by your veterinarian. If this is a cooked chicken bone and just one bone usually it will be digested and not cause your dog any issues. It is best to observe him for the next couple days for signs of GI upset to be on the safe side. If Hercules has loss of appetite, vomiting, abdominal pain, straining to have a bowel movement or lethargy then a visit to his vet is recommended.

Hello. As long as Bandit did not show any indication or irritation or problems swallowing the chicken bone, he should be fine. The bone will most likely soften in his stomach & be digested. Just watch him for the next few days for any signs of digestive distress including vomiting, a loss of appetite, bloating or abdominal pain. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In general, if there hasn’t been a problem for 48 hours, you’re in the clear. Continue feeding Indy as usual. If there is some diarrhea but Indy is still eating and playing and active, im still not terribly concerned. But if vomiting starts or you’re seeing lethargy or loss of appetite, it’s time to head in to the vet as soon as possible. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Indy!

If Jackson is eating and having normal bowel movements, he may have passed the fragments without your noticing. If Jaxson is. Bones usually are digested in the stomach but they may form gastro-intestinal obstruction or cause constipation. If Dolbie starts to vomit, strain to pass faeces, is passing stools with blood or not passing any stools at all for longer than 24hrs, you will have to take him to your local vets right away. If after 48hrs he does not develop any symptoms, it will mean that he is out of danger.

The normal gastric transit cycle is about three days (can be more or less), so I would just monitor him for a couple of more days before worrying about the bones getting stuck or causing a problem. While bones have the potential to get stuck in the stomach or intestines, they usually pass through just fine. While I don't advise feeding bones, the truth is that many dogs eat bones (chicken, lamb, beef, goat, fish) on a daily basis for their whole lives and don't ever have any complications from it. I just mention this to help ease any big concern, because more than likely, Ace will be just fine. If they did get stuck, then it would be apparent. A bowel obstruction or damage, would cause vomiting and pain. Ace would not be active and would likely not want to do anything. If you do happen to notice this, then it's best to take him to the vet as soon as possible. Again, it would be quite rare for it to cause a severe complication, so wait it out and I'm sure all will be OK. I hope that helps and all is well with Ace.
