My dog ate a chicken bone. What if it caused an intestinal puncture?

Oh dear! If you think that Rose may have bone shards in her intestines that are causing symptoms, there really isn't anything that you can safely to at home to try and treat this problem - she really needs to be seen by a vet right away. He/she can take x-rays to see if there are pieces of bone present. If they are causing a blockage or perforation of her intestine, she may need surgery to remove them.

Unfortunately after a chicken bone is eating, there's nothing that can be done. It's not recommended to induce vomiting, as the bone can get stuck in the esophagus or cause trauma to it. I would monitor Apollo for sign of obstruction and damage to the intestinal tract, which include vomiting, diarrhea, bloody feces, anorexia, constipation, vomiting blood, and lethargy. Should you see any of those signs, you will need to take Apollo into a vet immediately. You can give him a slice of whole wheat bread with every meal to form a ball of ingesta around the bone and cushion it as it passes through the GI tract.

Poor dog. Unfortunately bones have the potential to cause intestinal obstruction in pets, so you want to monitor him/her for he next 24-48 hrs for signs of trouble. The rotisserie chicken can also cause an acute inflammatory response of the pancreas (pancreatitis), so monitoring for that is also advised. Watch out for signs that include: excessive vomiting (even water), lack of appetite, and abdominal pain. If you see these symptoms then your pet should seek medical attention by your local vet immediately for a proper care. In the meantime you should feed your pet a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice or cottage cheese to help the stomach settle. You can also offer your pet 1/2-1 slice of bread (depending on the size of your pet) twice a day to help bind the bones and encourage passage through the gut. Also taking your pet on 20-30 minute brisk walks twice a day can help promote GI (gastrointestinal) motility and encourage passage of the bones as wel. Bones and raw food of any kind are a huge danger to any dog as they can cause serious infections, can perforate (poke a hole in) the intestines, cause gastritis, pancreatitis, and other issues. I would be very worried about a septic abdomen with Rowdy. If he is still not acting normally I would have him rechecked with your vet ASAP to do x-rays, a possible abdominal ultrasound to make sure there is no free fluid in his abdomen. If these are normal then your vet will likely treat for a gastritis/pancreatitis. If he can't stand and is having diarrhea, he could be very dehydrated and need IV fluids as well. I would strongly suggest pursing these other tests, especially if Rowdy is still acting the way you have described, with diarrhea and unable to stand. Best of luck with Rowdy.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Briggs. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian for x-rays. This will tell you if he ingested the bone or not. If not, then you will not have to worry. If so, this is potentially a serious situation. The bone can splinter can harm the stomach or intestines. A blockage can also result. The veterinarian will guide you as far as treatment recommendations. I hope this information helps!

Instead, you should monitor Riku at home for the next 24-48hrs for symptoms of vomiting, lack of appetite, lethargy difficulties to defecate. If you see any of them, you should take him to your local vets for an appointment as these symptoms would suggest gastrointestinal obstruction. However, most likely the little bones will be digested rapidly in the stomach and Riku will not show any worrying symptoms at all.

Ideally, Darcy should be seen by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. Abdominal xrays may be indicated after an exam to determine if she will be able to pass the bone or not. If not, endoscopy or surgery may be needed for removal. Induction of vomiting is usually not recommended in these cases. You should be seen by your physician to address your bite wounds.
