My dog ate a rib bone. Is his sickness from eating the bone?

This is very serious and he needs immediate veterinary attention. The bones are probably still in his stomach and intestinal tract and the diarrhea can quickly result in dehydration. Many dogs also get pancreatitis from eating rich, fatty foods. He will need fluids, an X-ray to determine where the bones are, and possibly surgery. My dog ate rib bones and he needed to be hospitalized and the bones surgically removed. Again this can become life threatening quickly so please take him in for treat soon. Poor Devious! Many dogs will have an upset stomach after eating something like this. The biggest concern is that the rib bones can have sharp edges and may cause an intestinal perforation, or they could become stuck and cause a blockage in her intestines. Signs of these problems would include repeated episodes of vomiting, acting lethargic, and not wanting to eat - if she develops any of these symptoms, she needs to see a vet immediately as she may need emergency surgery to remove the bones. If she is acting normal right now apart from some runny stool, you can try feeding her a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for the next 2-3 days to help settle her stomach and get things back to normal. If this doesn't help, or if she develops any other symptoms such as the ones I listed above, you will need to take her to the vet right away for an exam and treatment.

There is nothing else I'd recommend for treating diarrhea at home. If the diarrhea continues for more than 3 days, if you see blood, if Sunni seems to be straining when defecating without producing much stool, or if she vomits or has a decrease in appetite I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian. Rib bones often cause constipation, but sometimes a dog can pass small amounts of watery stool while constipated so watch closely for straining.

You can change his food to boiled chicken and rice as this is very bland. You can also get probiotics from any pet store to start. If he starts vomiting or has a decrease in appetite, or starts with bloody diarrhea, then he needs to be seen by your vet. If it continues past 48 hours with no improvement, then I would get him checked also

Poor Dakota. It sounds like he feels really bad. Bones can splinter in the GI tract and cause quite a bit of damage and pain, so I would recommend having your veterinarian examine him to make sure that he doesn't have any more bone fragments in his GI tract that are causing a problem. You vet can also prescribe an antibiotic that will help resolve the diarrhea and prevent any problems that the bone may have caused in the GI tract to help him feel better ASAP. Good luck! Poor dog. Unfortunately bones have the potential to cause intestinal obstruction in pets, so you want to monitor him/her for he next 24-48 hrs for signs of trouble. The rotisserie chicken can also cause an acute inflammatory response of the pancreas (pancreatitis), so monitoring for that is also advised. Watch out for signs that include: excessive vomiting (even water), lack of appetite, and abdominal pain. If you see these symptoms then your pet should seek medical attention by your local vet immediately for a proper care. In the meantime you should feed your pet a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice or cottage cheese to help the stomach settle. You can also offer your pet 1/2-1 slice of bread (depending on the size of your pet) twice a day to help bind the bones and encourage passage through the gut. Also taking your pet on 20-30 minute brisk walks twice a day can help promote GI (gastrointestinal) motility and encourage passage of the bones as wel. Bones can dissolve in the stomach with enough time. It sounds like Kyro had a bout of pancreatitis that caused the vomiting and diarrhea. If Kyro is now acting normal, I would continue to feed the bland diet and see what happens. It may take a day or two for there to be enough food ingested to create solid poop. If he stops eating, starts vomiting again, or seems lethargic, he should be re-examined by a vet.
