Subcutaneous fluids several times per week to help with hydration 8. Hyperbaric chamber therapy My last case of renal failure (also had cancer) lived 20 months past the expected prognosis of 6 months. This dog also was undergoing chemotherapy but I do believe all of the above helped improve his prognosis significantly. I would discuss these options with your veterinarian as well. You can certainly supplement her as it is not likely to hurt but the main control for kidney disease will be found with the protein and phosphorus. I wouldn’t have concerns about giving the Vetri-Science supplement along with enalapril and pimobendan, but it would be a good idea to check in with your vet first, particularly to see if a potassium has been checked recently. I would still recommend Dexter be seen by a veterinarian, for 2 reasons: 1) potassium in large doses can potentially have effects on major organs. Your veterinarian will be able to do a through examination as well as preform blood work to check potassium levels as well as administer treatment if necessary. Sometimes IV fluids and/or other medications may be necessary, 2) hydrogen peroxide can be very hard on the stomach and intestinal lining, your veterinarian may recommend medications to protect the gastrointestinal tract. Also fluids would help Dexter feel better after all the vomiting and IV (in a vein) is the quickest way to replenish those electrolytes. If Dexter’s attitude has changed or he continues to vomit for more than a hour, or you aren’t seeing pills in the vomit he absolutely needs to be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Feline diets are not appropriate for dogs, you should not give this food to her, I strongly recommend buying the dog kidney diet and just give the cat diet away or feed it to strays, if you have any in your area of living.
