My dog ate an entire Avocado skin and a little piece of the fruit itself. Do I need to go to the vet?

No, avocado does contain a toxin (persin) but it is not of concern in dogs. It is in other species. The biggest problem we see from avocados is obstruction due to ingestion of seed. Just monitor for vomiting or diarrhea. Follow up with your vet if your pet develops vomiting or diarrhea.

No worries at all ! We are to help.
Only certain species are poisoned by persin (the name of the toxin inside), but despite the rumors, avocado is not poisonous to dogs.
The major risk is represented by foreign body obstruction, which can occur if the dog swallowed the whole large, round avocado seed.
So I would not be worried at all!!

The toxin in avocados, persin, does not affect dogs as badly as it does birds and larger farm animals.
You can probably monitor him at home for now.
You may see some stomach upset ( vomiting or diarrhea). You can typically manage it at home with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. If the stomach upset is accompanied by lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain then have him seen by your veterinarian right away. These are symptoms of pancreatitis.
It is good he did not ingest the pit. That is the biggest worry due to risk of gastric or intestinal obstruction.

Hi and thanks for posting! Darkening of the skin can be a normal aging change in dogs or can occur secondary to a skin infection or allergies. Avocados, while toxic to certain animals, are not poisonous to dogs. Mild to moderate stomach upset can occur, however. If you are still concerned with the darkening skin, you may visit your veterinarian to have a skin infection or allergies ruled out. Avocados are not safe for dogs. They cause vomiting, diarrhea and lack of stool production. Since avocados also are high in fat they can cause pancreatitis. It is best not to let your dog eat avocados, ie remove all avocados from your garden or put a muzzle on your dog while he is in the garden.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If she did not eat the avocado pit completely and you were able to retrieve most of it, this may not become an issue. However, it is still warranted to monitor closely for any signs that could be indicative of a gastrointestinal obstruction such as vomiting, inappetence and abdominal pain. If these are observed at any point, have Aqua evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible as that may represent a gastrointestinal obstruction which most of the time requires surgery. If this is going to be an issue, usually symptoms can show up to a week after the event typically. Some dogs do develop transient gastrointestinal upset with vomiting, diarrhea and inappetence when they ingest avocado so if she also ate the avocado per se then this may be an issue. If that is seen, have Aqua evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good night! Hoping that nothing at all happens!
