My dog ate avocados and is coughing them up. Is it dangerous?

Avocado itself isn't toxic, but does have a high fat content that may cause GI upset. It may be a good idea to replace Kylie's regular diet for a few meals with some boiled rice and chicken to help settle her stomach, especially if she has any minor vomiting or diarrhea after eating the "snack". Some dogs can have severe reactions from eating too much fat, such as pancreatitis. Signs of something more severe that warrant a trip to the vet ASAP include blood in the vomit or diarrhea, painful abdomen, bloated abdomen, attempting to vomit or defecate without results, or general distress/lethargy/loss of appetite. If you do see these signs, scheduling a vet visit ASAP is best.

No, avocado does contain a toxin (persin) but it is not of concern in dogs. It is in other species. The biggest problem we see from avocados is obstruction due to ingestion of seed. Just monitor for vomiting or diarrhea. Follow up with your vet if your pet develops vomiting or diarrhea.

However, it is still warranted to monitor closely for any signs that could be indicative of a gastrointestinal obstruction such as vomiting, inappetence and abdominal pain. If these are observed at any point, have Aqua evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible as that may represent a gastrointestinal obstruction which most of the time requires surgery. If this is going to be an issue, usually symptoms can show up to a week after the event typically. Some dogs do develop transient gastrointestinal upset with vomiting, diarrhea and inappetence when they ingest avocado so if she also ate the avocado per se then this may be an issue. It is definitely a good sign if she is active and is eating and drinking well. Diarrhea is a common problem with puppies and is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). It doesn't appear to be serious right now, but it's always possible that it could be the start of something serious. If Ruby has any of the following, then she should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea lasting longer than 24 hours 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can help him get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions (1/4 cup or less) three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available. Avocados are not toxic to dogs (some websites erroneously report that they are), but are high in fat, which can cause some digestive upset. For this reason and the fact that the avocado pit poses danger, I usually advise owners to avoid feeding it. I hope this helps and Ruby gets better soon.
