My dog is sore after lepto vaccine. Can I give doggy aspirin for pain?

I'm sorry to hear that Moose is uncomfortable after his vaccine. I would recommend contacting his regular veterinarian for a canine anti inflammatory to help with his discomfort if he needs it. Many human medications should not be used for dogs and can have adverse side effects.

I don’t recommend starting any medications without first consulting your veterinarian. Treating your pet at home without having seen your vet first could mask symptoms that could lead to a quicker diagnosis should it become necessary for your pet to be examined. Arbitrary administration of antibiotics without knowing if it is appropriate for the condition is what creates antibiotic-resistant organisms. Absolutely DO NOT give your dog Tylenol, or any other human analgesic or NSAID. At best, they cause gastric bleeding, at worst they are toxic to liver and kidneys. Consult your veterinarian before giving your dog medications of any kind.

I do not recommend giving her aspirin, as it may have some unwanted side effects in dogs such as damage to the kidneys, gastric ulcers, and bleeding issues when given in high doses. Your vet can take x-rays to see where the trauma is, and perform blood work to make sure that Wednesday's organs are functioning properly to handle any pain medication, as well as place a cast or splint if necessary. Well that depends on the severity of the adverse reaction. If she is having a mild vaccine reaction (1 bout of vomiting, loose stool), then an anti-histamine (i.e. Benadryl) can be given in most cases and will calm the reaction down. However if she is having a more severe adverse reaction (i.e. continuous vomiting, anaphylaxis, severe lethargy, anorexia), then she will need an antihistamine shot (for immediate reversal), +/- steroid shot from your vet , +/- fluid therapy and close monitoring to ensure that the reaction subsides and that she remains stable.

Aspirin is very hard on a dog's stomach, and can cause gastrointestinal distress and even ulcers or organ failure if given in too large of a dose, or over a long period of time. There are now lots of pain medications available that are made specifically for dogs that have less of an effect of their body, though they are only available through your vet or a veterinary pharmacy. If you have a relationship with a veterinarian, they may be willing to write you a prescription for a dog-safe pain medication if Whitney has been seen at the office recently. You may be required to go in for a visit if it has been a while, however, as there must be a recent client-veterinarian-patient relationship for the vet to dispense or prescribe these drugs safely. I would avoid carrying them if it makes them cry, and you can try putting a cold compress on site if they will let you for five minutes at a time a couple of times of day to see if that helps. Please do not give them any human pain medications, as many are toxic to puppies and can be fatal if given. This pain should go away in a day or two. If it doesn't, give the vet a call, as they may want to see the puppies. As for side effects, typically you would see them develop within 24 hours of the vaccines.
