My dog has an armpit spot. Should I see a vet or can it wait?

I found this spot in my dog's armpit. Should I go to have it checked out by the doctor? I am planning to take her in for a checkup in a few weeks to review the results of a food change. Can it wait until then?

This spot looks quite small, and it doesn't appear infected from your picture. If it isn't bothering your dog, isn't getting bigger, and doesn't get infected (red, swollen, warm to touch, pus), then it can wait until her check up in a few weeks. Should any of the things I mentioned above happen, then I would take her into a vet sooner. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

The problem with creams is that dogs typically lick them off. Plus I don't know what is causing the itching, so I can't say what treatment is needed. I would have Lucy seen by a vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing the itching, and can treat it.

This spot does look very irritated. If Kash is itchy there I would put a little shirt or a baby onesie so that she can't scratch at it and cause more trauma. You could start by applying a thin layer of topical triple antibiotic ointment and hydrocortisone a couple times a day to see if that helps with the irritation. If it continues, I would recommend taking her to your veterinarian to look for infection, parasites, etc. and get the appropriate treatment for her.

If she seems fine otherwise you can opt to keep an eye on it and make sure it continues to improve. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This is unlikely to be an emergency so it is ok to go to the veterinarian on Saturday unless something changes with him at home and she does not appear to be doing well at some point. My dog has a red, inflamed spot or lump on its arm. What is it?

The photos are a bit grainy but I think what I am seeing is a lump that looks like a histiocytoma. It usually will go away on it's own within a few weeks to months. I suggest you leave it alone. My dog has a spot on her chest that doesn't bother her. Is it serious?

It’s hard for me to tell from your picture if this is raised. If so, it could be a skin mass like a histiocytoma or cyst. If it is flat it could be a small hot spot or area of skin infection. I’d recommend having your vet examine it in person for a definitive diagnosis.

This looks to be a histiocytoma. I don't think he needs a vet visit just yet. Often these will go away on their own. I would only be worried if it doesn't go away in a month or so OR if it grows larger OR if it starts to bother him. My dog has a red spot on his arm that's getting bigger. What is it?

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any).
