Why is my anxious dog panting and hot after an 18-hour car trip?

He probably suffers car/bus trips and he is likely to feel sick; he may vomit any time. I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 24hours. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. I would recommend taking Buddy to a veterinarian if we are still breathing heavy. They can get stressed and breath heavier from anxiety but my concern is that puppies this young can get sick and decline quickly. Dogs cannot sweat to release heat, so they have to pant to breathe off heat. As long as Lassie can settle down and act normally, eat, drink, etc, he should be OK. I hope this is helpful!

Many dogs suffer from anxiety when travelling, acclimatizing them to a safe crate now before the journey home, which can be used in the car can help as can calming supplements, pheromone sprays and magnetic collars. In severe cases, a vet may prescribe mild tranquilizer medications but these are not without risks outside of the supervision of trained veterinary staff, especially on a long journey and with an older pug. Hello. This sounds like a mild hypoxic episode from hyperventilating. It is probably a normal response for your dog. If at her last veterinary visit everything checked out normal ( normal heart rate, pulses, gum color & no murmur detected ), then I would just assume that this was related to her panic, If, however, it has been more than a year since she was examined, then I would take her in. If you had a major panic attack it is very possible that Sushi picked up on your stress and is worried for you. Giving yourself and her some time to settle back down and relax, either by spending it cuddling, watching a soothing TV show, listening to calming music, etc, may help you both settle back down. If she doesn't return to normal, or she shows obvious signs of illness, then a vet visit to rule out any issues is always a good idea.

Since this is a behavior without appropriate context (like thunderstorms), I would recommend having Lily examined by a vet. These types of behaviors can be similar to pain responses, difficulty breathing, heart arrhythmia, pre-seizure activity, etc. The vet will do a thorough exam and discuss Lily's relevant medical history to determine if additional diagnostics are necessary.
