Dog anxious after new baby? Chewing, barking, refusing to go out.

I would strongly recommend to get her on an anti-anxiety medicine. If she is this aggressive when she normally wasn't before babies, she could also have something else going on. I would have your vet take a look at her to ensure she is otherwise healthy. Your vet will be able to put her on some anti-anxiety medicine to help calm her nerves. She likely being very protective over her babies or she could be in pain somewhere. I am sorry that I do not have a great over the counter or quick remedy. These things take time. You could give her a calming chew or calming collar but I am afraid these wouldn't be strong enough. Plus, I cannot say whether or not they are safe for a nursing mother. Finally, I would try to arrange a place for her to be when you have your company arrive. If you have to board her or take her to someone else's house, you may need to do this. Having a lot of strangers in her house especially if they are wanting to see her puppies will only stress her out more. I would keep her and the puppis separated from the guests unless you are confident that she is better.

Adding a new baby to the house can be very disorienting for dogs. It causes a huge change of routine and priorities. Maybe Leona is walked or played with less than before the baby - this is all very common and somewhat unavoidable. The change in routines is usually quite stressful and can lead to pets becoming more anxious or having trouble with training. It's also possible that Leona is having some sort of medical problem that is causing her to urinate and defecate more. I would recommend trying to walk and play with Leona as much as you reasonably can. Going on a walk on leash is much better than throwing a ball or playing with a toy, in terms of her mental health. Ignore her accidents (if she gets a big reaction to them and that's the only time she gets attention, she could be learning that it's a good way to get attention) and make sure she has many opportunities to go outside. If the problem continues (and lasts more than a few weeks), I would recommend a vet visit for a check up to make sure nothing is wrong medically. Good luck!

That is very concerning and you should definitely not have the baby and the dog in the same room. The best thing would be to have a professional trainer work with your dog to try and modify the behavior, especially if you are planning on having a baby soon. You could also get an Adaptil collar and see if that helps. Your vet could also prescribe an anti-anxiety medication, like Prozac or Trazodone, to see if that helps, too.

Hello. Yes, it is possible that Chico suffered some anxiety while you were gone. I would try & have your Mom become a little more involved in Chico's care by taking him for walks & administering some meals & treats while you are there & while you are away. You can also start him on a very mild antianxiety product called Zylkene. It can take several weeks to reach full effect, but over time it can make him calmer. Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern! Unfortunately, separation anxiety can be quite difficult to address for most dogs. I usually recommend a multi modal approach. I recommend the following non-prescription approach prior to anything prescription: 1. NaturVet Quiet Moments calm chews plus Melatonin (can be found online quite easily. 2. Adaptil pheromone collar 3. Adaptil diffuser 4. Thundershirt In combination with this, I typically recommend providing plenty of toys such as a kong toy filled with peanut butter and some other noise making toys. I have recently recommended a product called the Pet Cube. This allows you to watch him via an app on your phone remotely and you can even control a laser pointer and interact with him while you are away. If this does not work or the behavior worsens, I typically recommend adding in anti-anxiety medications such as Trazodone, Amitriptyline, Clomipramine (clomicalm), etc. in combination with the above recommendations. Hi there! Betty sure sounds shaken up by her new housemate. There are some natural supplements you can try to help alleviate her anxiety. Zylkene is a natural supplement that your veterinarian can prescribe. It can be very helpful in these types of situations. Another product called, Canine Compsure, is also a natural supplement that may be helpful. I would try these products first. They should help with Betty's anxiety with her new friend.
