How to help my 8-month-old puppy with severe separation anxiety?

Separation anxiety can be difficult to address but with patience and persistence training can help. Rather than starting on anti-anxiety medications right away, I typically recommend trying products such as NaturVet Quiet Moments Calm Chews with Melatonin and an Adaptil collar, which can both be found online or at your local pet store quite easily. I would also recommend using a Thundershirt, which can be found online or at the pet store. It would also help if you began feeding Sienna breakfast and dinner in the kennel so that she becomes used to being inside the cage for positive things. I would move all of her toys to the inside of the kennel and whenever she goes inside the kennel, reward her with her favorite treat. If this does not help, I would recommend speaking with her veterinarian and discuss anti-anxiety medications as these may be beneficial in deterring this separation anxiety she suffers from. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. It sounds like Loki has a fitting name! Unfortunately, he has separation anxiety and this can be difficult to correct many times. I would recommend providing him with plenty of toys including the kong toy that allows you to insert peanut butter or small treats so that he has to really work to get the treat. Adaptil priducta, which can be found online, can also help. If you are unable to correct this behavior, I would try NaturVet quiet moments calm chews with Melatonin which can be found online or at your local pet store. If there is still no improvement after trying these, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate treatment can be recommended such as anti anxiety medicatioms. Hello. I would start with an over the counter anxiety product like Zylkene. I would also start using a dog appeasing pheromone in the home ( room diffuser ) or it comes as a collar. The pheromone can calm an anxious dog without drugs. Adaptil is the name of this product. If this does not help over the course of a couple of weeks, you will need to talk to your vet about possible behavior modification therapy & the use of prescription medications like Trazodone. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. It sounds like snowball is dealing with separation anxiety. This can be difficult to address, but it can be done. The most important thing when addressing separation anxiety is providing plenty of environmental stimulation or enrichment. By this, I mean providing plenty of toys, interactive things such as tennis ball launchers, radios or TVs playing,etc. I find that one of the most useful things for dealing with this is a device called the petcube. This device allows you to monitor your pet through a web camera. It also allows you to talk through a microphone built-in on the device that you can speak to through your phone via an app. The petcube also has a laser pointer that you can control so that you can play with your pet away from home. When training a dog to get over separation anxiety, it is important to start with small periods of time where you are apart from snowball. By this, I mean leaving for 5 to 10 minutes, and then coming back and reassuring snowball that you are still there. Gradually increase the periods of time at which you leave her alone in the crate or in a small room or wherever she is when you leave her. I would probably do this on the weekend if you have the weekends off so that you can spend an entire weekend working with snowball. In really bad cases such as destructive separation anxiety where the animal is destroying things around the house, anti-anxiety medications may be warranted in those cases. However, with snowball I would start with the non-medicated training and see if you can get her more comfortable alone at home. I hope this helps! Great question! When a dog has separation anxiety, typically you will see destructive behaviors from them when you leave the house, such as tearing up objects. They can also excessively salivate, whine, howl, bark, chew on things, defecate and/or urinate in the home, dig, or try to escape the house. If you are concerned that Fox may have separation anxiety, there are a few things you can do for it. I recommend crating him when you are gone. The crate will provide him a small space where he can feel safe in it when you are gone. You will have to slowly train him to get used to a crate. Start putting him in it when you are home and sitting nearby so he doesn't think you are abandoning him, and slowly increase the time he is in it. He can have toys in the crate, and puzzle toys with treats in it that he has to figure out how to get the treats out. You can put a tablespoon of peanut butter in a Kong toy and freeze it in the freezer overnight, then give it to him in the crate. That will keep him occupied for a while. Finally, you can get a pheromone diffuser called DAP that helps dogs with anxiety and pair that will a DAP pheromone collar that releases pheromones when in contact with his skin. If these methods do not help him, then I recommend having him seen by a vet to discuss the use of anti-anxiety medications. Good luck, I hope this helps!
