Spayed puppy anxious about incision. How much calming aid to give?

I'm sorry to hear Kona is not feeling well! This can be totally normal after surgery. Sometimes they have whats called 'Dysphoria' and they will be agitated and not able to settle. Basically they are still feeling weird from the anesthesia but they don't understand what's happening to them so they become anxious. I would advise to sit with her in a quiet location with soft music (classical and reggae music have both been shown to soothe dogs) and keep the environment stimulation free. While these herbs are generally safe, interactions can occur. Given that the sedation chemicals are still in her body, I would not advise to use this supplement. Its best to avoid interactions. Try to pet her and reassure her. By the morning she will likely be feeling better. If she is still anxious tomorrow, call the veterinarian for additional medications that can sedate or provide anxiety relief. I hope Kona settles down quickly and falls asleep. Best of luck!

No, you cannot give her any more metacam today as she already got it by Injection at the end of the surgery and this medication can only be given once a day. Try to keep her on a soft surface with a gentle bedding, try offering her treats and keep her occupied with very gentle playing. Tomorrow she will already feel much better.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Typically a combination of drugs is administered prior to the procedure. I typically like giving the pre-medication 15-20 minutes prior to the procedure. This should not set her back and once she is out of the unfamiliar vet clinic, she should be fine. You can ask the veterinarian to pre-medicate her prior to the procedure so that she is not so stressed out. It is not necessary to keep dogs that have been spayed overnight. All of my spay procedures go home that exact same day. If you feel she will be too stressed out while there, I would be more apt to have you keep Sie at home for the post-op recovery period. Keeping puppies "quiet" after surgery is certainly not an easy undertaking! The good news is that I think her incision is healing beautifully. There is very mild inflammation right around the incision, but the incision appears to be closed and does not appear to have any discharge. Continue doing your best to keep her as quiet as possible for the next week, but I know it's not possible to turn a 5 month old GSP puppy into a couch potato! If she's really out of control, you can ask your vet about prescribing mild sedative medications (like trazodone) to help her to stay a bit more mellow while healing. Keeping an e-collar (cone) on her is the best thing you can do to promote healing, as this prevents her from licking at the incision at all. Hope that everything continues to go well!

Benadryl is fine and safe to give however if she isn’t calmer out of her kennel you can let out when you are there to supervise her. As long as she is. It running around playing fetch and chasing things or jumping up and down a bunch, then she will be fine. Benadryl can be given twice a day safely and 25 mg is appropriate

Melatonin is generally used for sleep disorders and phobias. The dosage for Melatonin is 0.1mg/kg OR 1-9 mg per dog (depending on size), given 1-3 times a day. So that is around 2 mg or up to 5mg every 8 hrs for a medium sized dog like Sadie. Therefore I would recommend waiting at least 8 hrs in between doses before giving Sadie another dose. Also I would consider asking your vet for another anxiety specific medication such as Alprazolam. She went through major abdominal surgery. Her incision appears to be healing well from your pictures. I hope this information helps!
