Why did my vet prescribe an antibiotic for my dog's limping joints?

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | spayed | 44 lbs

Hi. I just took my dog to the vet, but I'm confused with the diagnosis. He said she had crepitus in the joints, she was limping, and prescribed enrofloxacin. They were really busy so I didn't get to ask many questions. I looked up the medication and I don't understand how it will help the grating he heard in her joints. It seems to be an antibiotic. Does it help with inflammation or something? Thank you for the information.

Maybe the vet is concerned Azul has an infection in her joints causing the problems and that's why an antibiotic was prescribed. I'm not sure without seeing her in person, so I'd give her vet a call to ask. I hope this helps!

I would be looking into the possibility of this being something affecting the joints per se such as immune mediated polyarthritis or perhaps something like hypertrophic osteodystrophy given his young age. These are possible things your veterinarian can look into. Treatment of course would depend on findings. At the very least they can try pain control medications and anti-inflammatory drugs. Hello, sorry to hear about Baloo. It could indeed be lyme disease and he may need either amoxicillin or doxycycline. Before staring him on antibiotics, you can test him for lyme disease with a snap test. If positive, then this could be more of a reason to start him on antibiotics. Hope this helps and best of luck.

These symptoms are very suspicious of a tick born disease such as tick fever, babesiosis or lyme disease. you should take him back to your vet and request a blood test to identify those potential blood parasites, treatment is with some very specific medications and antibiotics.

I doubt the coughing and the limping are related at all. Call the vet office when you get a chance but I would just recommend resting him for 5-7 days - meaning only going outside on a leash to use the bathroom. No running, jumping, playing or stairs. If after trying this and there is no improvement then he should go back and see the vet.

My dog's limping with a painful toe and long nail. Can I use old meds?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Reggie. I do not recommend giving him the cephalexin as you do not know for sure why his toe is sore. While he could have an infection, he could also have a wound, broken toe nail, a fracture or foreign object in the paw. Antibiotics are needed in some of these circumstances, but not all. He will need to see his veterinarian to determine the source of the lameness and the best treatment option for him. I hope this information helps!
