My dog is limping, had a fever, and now struggles to walk. What to do?

Normal temperature of a dog is 102.5 so her temp is just mildly elevated and could be caused by the stress and excitement of going to the vet. You could take her temperature at home and see if it elevated. Inflammation can could cause a mild elevation but I would be concerned if it increases and/or stays elevated. If she doesn't improve on the Deramaxx and the limp continues then your vet will need to do additional testing to determine the cause. An x-ray and blood work would definitely be recommended if she doesn't improve. Hope she feels better soon!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sometimes dogs feel warm and do not have a fever so I would not necessarily think that she has a fever because her tongue is warm. If you wanted to be sure, you can check her temperature rectally and if in between 99.5 and 102.5 then she would be ok. I do recommend though that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for the foot issue. This can sometimes occur from trauma to the leg and it would be worth knowing if there is any evidence of a fracture or something of that nature. Your veterinarian could perform radiographs if deemed necessary on examination. Good luck and have a great day!

Hi and thanks for your post. Fever along with limping or non weight baring on a limb is concerning. She may have a joint infection or a systemic illness such as lyme disease or another tick borne illness. Katana should see a vet for this issue has an x-ray will need to be taken of her joint, blood work done, and antibiotics administered. If going to a vet is not an option due to finances, there is not a lot that can be done as far as home remedies for this especially if the cause is not yet known. Putting an ice pack covered in a towel over the leg or joint for 20 mins 3 times daily can help decrease the swelling initially. Seeing your vet would be the best option for Katana. She could still be suffering from Tick fever, this disease is known to be very resistant to treatment and it sometimes takes several months of treatment to get rid of it. you will need to take her back to the vet ASAP in order to resume the antibiotic treatment, this time for a longer period of time.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gidget! How old is Gidget? Have they tested her for Lyme disease or other tick born diseases? That should be done. Other possibilities are immune medicated joint disease or meningitis but Lyme disease is very high on my list. Good luck!

Best take him to a veterinarian tomorrow as he will need a blood test and medication for about 3-4 weeks again against the babesia. There is nothing you can do tonight until you take him to the vet. He should be fine. Should his temperature go to 40C or above you need to take him to a vet tonight, either an out of hours service or a pet ER.

Lameness, loss of appetite and energy are definitely concerning. This can be caused by tick borne diseases such as Lyme disease. There are also certain bone and joint diseases that only affect growing puppies, and need to be ruled out with an x-Ray. I recommend having your appointment sooner rather than later, you may want to call your vet and ask for an earlier appointment.
