My dog has atopic dermatitis. Are frequent antibiotics safe for him?

If this is a recurring skin issue, he most likely had an underlying allergy. It could be an allergy to environmental things, or an allergy to the protein in the food. You can treat the infection, but it will keep returning if the underlying issue isn't also addressed. I would talk with your veterinarian about allergies. The antibiotics are not too harsh, and won't cause kidney damage

Hi, German Sheperd are frequently getting antibiotics during the course of their life. If given judiciously antibiotics are unlikely to cause problems to their kidneys. With regards to the question about some dogs being able to live without any antibiotics in the world, yes I believe there are quite a few ! I'm not sure why you keep posting the same photo with different information. If you give a short course of medications there should be no issues with damage to the liver or kidneys. All you can do is give the medication as directed and have the kidney and liver enzymes checked periodically by your vet to make sure there is no damage being done. It is very rare for damage to occur from these medications even though it is possible for it to happen. This photo does not show any infection. The color change to the lips appears to be vitiligo. If there is an infection it is not evident by the photos. Please follow your vet's instructions as they are the one that have examined your dog in person.

Ceohalexin once per day is not recommended. It needs to be given 2-3 times daily. That is likely why the infection keeps returning- it is probably never completely gone because the medication is not given correctly. A normal course of antibiotics is not likely to damage the liver or kidneys. You are making more of this possibility than you need to. That may happen 0.0001% of the time. I have never seen antibiotics, when used correctly, cause this problem in 25 years of my experience. Antibiotics are very useful drugs and needed in some cases like this. If you want a once a day antibiotic you can ask your vet for cefpodoxime. It is made for once daily dosing. He probably keeps getting these hot spots due to an underlying allergy. No German Shephards are not particularly prone to kidney disease. Your pet was never on an antibiotic according to this record. The Cetrizine is an anti-histamine, basically over the counter Zyrtec. The prednisolone is a steroid that usually affects the liver over time and can cause UTI's if used daily for more than 3-4 weeks at a time, not particularly kidney problems. The anti-fungal medication (Terbinafine) can affect the kidney but typically over if it is used over a very long period of time, such as weeks to months consecutively. So I would say that with the information you have provided, the risk of damage to Bruno's kidneys is pretty low to non-existent. I hope this helps! Best wishes and take care.

There are all different causes of skin eczema, but if your veterinarian put you on a combination of an antibiotic & anti-fungal medication, I would guess Bruno has a pretty serious skin problem. If he does have a fungal element to his skin disease, I just do not believe 5 days is long enough to do anything at all. Sometimes, these things need to be treated for 6-8 weeks before a cure is achieved. Does Bruno have any underlying organ dysfunction. I was not familiar with the trypsin , bromelain, rutoside preparation, but I found a paper where it was used to ameliorate the course of chronic renal failure in a rat model. Without knowing the exact diagnosis of Bruno's condition I cannot comment on your veterinarian's course of action. Perhaps he is just being cautious, but in my experience, most of these skin issues do take quite a bit more time to resolve than 5 days. Stay in close contact with your vet & follow all recommendations, but the actually drug amounts that were prescribes are reasonable to use over time. In most cases these skin infections, called bacterial pyoderma, are allergy-related. The antibiotics will help, but as you've experienced the skin problems will come back if the primary allergic disease isn't controlled. The hydroxyzine Becher took was an antihistamine, and that may have helped control the itchiness, however it sounds to me that he needs something a bit stronger to control the allergies and thus the skin infections. Talk to your vet about using Apoquel or Atopica on him; these are great drugs with minimal side effects that really help allergic dogs.
