Why did my dog's anal gland burst? Could my vet have predicted it?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 5 years and 9 months old | 8 lbs

My Chihuahua had to go to the emergency vet because her anal gland had burst. She has some straining but very minimal. She had seen out regular vet a month before the incident and he said she was fine. Should my primary vet be able to foresee that? My mom said I should find a new vet but the emergency vet defended my primary vet by saying "it happens sometimes and can't be prevented".

Hi. I'm sorry Moon had an anal gland abscess. Unfortunately these can come up fairly quickly and can't always be prevented. Now that you know Moon may be predisposed to anal gland problems you can discuss some prevention tips with your primary veterinarian. Some dogs benefit by having thier anal glands expressed regularly - your veterinary hospital can do this or teach you if you're interested. Sometimes diet changes can help, but discuss with your vet. Unfortunately a month earlier hersnal glands may have been completely normal and your vet would have no way of predicting this. Be sure to follow the directions from the ER vet and finish any medications prescribed for Moon

My dog's anal gland popped. How do I care for it and prevent issues?

This can be painful and messy so I recommend using a hot compress on the area several times a day to keep it clean and draining. Then I apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on the surface. As Milo will lick the area using a cone or restraint collar to prevent licking will help it heal faster. Once the sac has ruptured it usually will heal quickly on its own. Continue the antibiotics until they are finished. To prevent this from happening again I would have Milo's anal sacs expressed regularly, every two to three months. My dog's anal glands popped. How do I prevent future infections?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Sofie. I recommend that she has her anal glands regularly expressed by her veterinarian. This way they can be closely monitored for any sign of a recurring infection or impaction. Initially she should have them expressed by her veterinarian every 3-4 weeks. My dog's anal gland ruptured. Is it an emergency or can I wait?

Ouch, poor Luna! Based on the pictures you provided (thank you for that!), they do not look overly red, swollen, and there are no signs of blood. As long as she is eating and drinking normally, going to the bathroom normally, and otherwise behaving normally, she can wait until the morning to see the vet. I would put an Ecollar on her to prevent her from licking at her anus, and you can make one at home. I will put a link below on how to do that. If she is in a lot of pain, isn't eating, is lethargic, and/or is having trouble going to the bathroom, then I would take her into a vet now. This looks like a ruptured anal gland, the medication she is currently on should help to prevent infection but you should have the other gland checked and emptied by your vet or vet tech to prevent the second from rupturing also. As long as the area is kept clean it should heal uneventfully, a high fiber supplement may help in preventing further recurrence

My dog's anal gland ruptured. Can it heal at home without a vet?

Don't panic! Yes this will heal on its own. What I recommend you do is make a warm epsom salt solution and soak her little bum in the solution several times daily until the swelling goes down. She is small enough that you could put a 1/4 c of epsom salt in a kitchen sink-sized basin and have her sit in this until the water cools. This does a great job of healing the hole and drawing out the infection and swelling.

Hello. Most anal gland infections heal up quite nicely with medications & keeping the area clean. Unless there is a special circumstance involving Tia's glands, such as the area is just not healing, additional flushing & treatment is usually not necessary.
