Is it normal to feel bumps after my dog's anal glands are cleaned?

They are likely not full again but may be a bit irritated due to the expression. If your dog keeps scooting for more than a day or two then I suggest you take him back to your veterinarian for a recheck.

Hello. I think if his anal glands were indeed very full then I decompressing them could make his anus wider in diameter. However, if you have been lifting his tail more often to check his anus, this can also stimulate his anus to become dilated. Other causes for a dilated anus could include him being sore from the expression of his anal glands or having to defecate. Walk him, and if he seems to be going to the bathroom normally, is not licking or scooting then he should be ok. Hope this helps and best of luck.

I am afraid I cannot see a lump on this photo, however if you can feel a lump near the anus it is likely a full or impacted anal sac. *You may need to take your dog to a vet to have it expressed, if he is bothered by it. Usually dogs start scooting on the floor when they have a bothersome anal sac.

Some experts may say 4 and 8, while others may say 3 and 9. The lump in the image does not appear to be located where the anal glands are. Ideally, you should have Lucky examined by your veterinarian. If this is not possible, monitor the lump for rapid change, growth or discomfort. If you see any of these changes, he will need an exam.

Residual inflammation is normal, especially if the glands were already inflamed. You may call your vet and ask about a course of anti-inflammatory medication. Omega 3 fatty acids can also help. Lastly, a cool (not cold) compress may be a better option to relieve the burning. Sometimes supplements like Glandex can help. If Adam continues to have itchy anal glands, you may want to discuss ruling out food allergies with your vet. I always use a hydrolyzed protein for this. I hope this helps.

There are two ways to express anal glands, internal and external . Groomers generally express the glands externally. The internal expression is generally better and more complete. From now on, have Mario’s anal glands expressed internally every three months. If a groomer is not able to provide this type of expression, he will need to see the veterinarian for this. You can also be taught how to do this type of expression at home. There is a product called Glandex which made aide in normal anal gland expression but it is possible he may still need them expressed. I hope this helps.

Hi and thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This appears to be what we call an anal gland abscess, which is an infected anal gland. The anal glands are two sacks location at the 4 and 10 o'clock position that are usually expressed when your pet poops. However, some pets have a hard time expressing and emptying these sacks on their own, which leads to them filling up and getting infected. This needs to be addressed by your vet unfortunately because the sacks needs to be opened up and flushed. This often has to be done under a mild sedative.
