Why does my dog have a pus-filled bump near her anus? Can I squeeze it?

My dog has a bump almost puss looking on the left side of her anus. What could this be ? Should I try to squeeze it?

Hi and thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
This appears to be what we call an anal gland abscess, which is an infected anal gland. The anal glands are two sacks location at the 4 and 10 o'clock position that are usually expressed when your pet poops. However, some pets have a hard time expressing and emptying these sacks on their own, which leads to them filling up and getting infected. This needs to be addressed by your vet unfortunately because the sacks needs to be opened up and flushed. This often has to be done under a mild sedative. For now just apply a cold compress to the area. I hope that Fiffy gets better soon. Best wishes and take care.

It might be helpful if you could post another question on the forum and attach a good picture, but it sounds like it could be an anal gland abscess. Anal glands are small pockets right inside the anus. You can't see them from the outside. It is common for them to fill up, become infected and burst onto the surface of the skin right next to the anus (roughly 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock). This usually requires veterinary attention for treatment of the abscess and to prescribe oral antibiotics and pain medication. Until you can get to the vet, you can apply a warm compress to the area for 10-15 minutes 2-3 times daily to encourage the pus to drain. Please do not give any over-the-counter human pain medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen or Tylenol as these can have serious side effects in animals.

That looks like it could possibly be an anal sac abscess. These are painful and need antibiotics to resolve. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. In the meantime you can warm compress the area with warm water washcloth. Ouch, poor Wyatt! I would not express it again and take him into the vet to have it treated. Pus indicates infection, and that requires antibiotics to treat. This will also have to be drained sterilely to prevent spread of the infection. I would take him into the vet today. I hope this helps!

My dog has a painful, infected bump near her butt. Could it be anal glands?

Your pet may have an inflamed or infected [anal gland](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/conditions-of-the-anal-glands). [Impacted or abscessed anal glands](https://www.petcoach.co/article/anal-glands-sacs-impactions-infections-abscesses-in-dogs) are very painful and makes it difficult to defecate or even move. Without treatment, an impacted gland may abscess and rupture, causing a open wound on your pet's rear that will require wound care, antibiotics and pain relief. I recommend getting your pet seen by your vet. He or she will express (empty) the anal glands, clean her up and possibly start her on antibiotics and pain medication if indicated. You can ask to be shown how to express the anal glands yourself at home so you can avoid impaction or infection in the future. Increased dietary fiber or supplements, such as [Glandex](), may help prevent anal gland issues as well.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. Based on the location, often times these tumors are benign in nature and are known as perianal adenomas though about 10% are malignant and again it could be really any other tumor type. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. My dog has bubble-like lumps around his anus. What could they be?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! These look classic for perianal gland tumors. This is very common in intact dogs. The majority of these tumors are benign though a small percentage of them are malignant. I recommend you take him to your veterinarian for a test called a fine needle aspirate which can help distinguish these tumors from other more concerning tumors. If it truly is a perianal gland tumor, most of the time they resolve or greatly improved by neutering the dog as they are driven by hormones. If they are not bothering him, this may be enough. What is this swollen lump on my dog's butt and what should I do?

This is likely her anal gland that is inflamed and infected and likely to rupture. There are anal glands found on every dog that are just inside the rectum roughly at the 4 and 10 o'clock position that should empty on their own when your pet poops. However, some pets have a hard time doing this, and these will fill up and become infected. You will need to take Copper to your vet soon to have these flushed out, lanced, and then he will need to be placed on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication. I hope that your pet Copper gets this resolved soon. Talk with your vet about getting his anal glands expressed regularly at the vet to hopefully prevent this from happening in the future. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. My dog has a fast-growing lump above her anus. What could it be?

Hi, and thanks for your question. This lump/bump/growth should be ideally examined by your local vet to have a diagnosis established. Your vet may want to perform an FNA (fine needle aspiration) or a biopsy to sample the bump and determine its underlying nature. Differentials would include skin cysts, infections, benign or more malignant type of tumors.
