My aggressive dog has a hole and lump near groin. What should I do?

I'm sorry Pogo has this going on. Many things can cause what you describe, but I am suspicious that it might be an infected and now ruptured tumor. This could be benign or malignant, but should be evaluated quickly. Your veterinarian may have to treat the infection before they can diagnose what the lump may be. In the mean time warm compresses may help it drain and make Pogo feel better. Keep him indoors and away from flies or the wound will be full of maggots in a day. Good luck to both of you! Poor guy. Spiky needs to be seen by a vet for this. This could be a number of things and if there are tumors, he needs surgery. If there is an odor he will also likely need prescription antibiotics. Please take him in soon for medical treatment as this cannot be treated at home. Until you can get him seen by your vet you can try cleaning the area with Betadine diluted 50;50 with water. Hello, and thank you for your question. This looks like it could be a lump on the skin, or a focal area of infection on the skin. It may be bleeding now because Spud has been scratching at it. I would have it assessed by a vet within the next few days to pinpoint what it is. If a lump is found, they may recommend a fine needle aspirate to find out the nature of the lump. If it is a skin infection, medication can be prescribed to treat it. In the meantime, I would suggest putting an e-collar on Spud to prevent him from further chewing or licking at the lesion. If it is on the body (not the legs) you can try putting a t-shirt over him to again protect the area from further trauma. I hope this helps, and that Spud gets better soon!

Without further testing, there is no way to tell if this growth is due to infection, trauma or allergy, or if it is a tumour. Tumours can be of a malignant (cancerous) type that can spread elsewhere and/ or invade the healthy tissue around them, or a more benign (noncancerous) type that is unlikely to spread. I recommend making an appointment to see your vet to have the growth tested. In many cases this can be done using a fine needle aspirate, where cells are removed from the growth using a needle and examined under a microscope to determine what it is and to guide treatment. In some cases further testing may be needed to determine the necessary course of treatment, but it is important to get new growths tested in a timely manner, as some can be cancerous and quite aggressive in their growth, and growths due to infection, allergy or trauma can lead to complications or be indicators of underlying health problems. In the meantime, it is very important that you keep Trey from licking the area to help prevent infection by making sure he wears the “cone” (also known as an e-collar or Elizabethan collar) at all times when he is not being directly supervised by you, including while sleeping. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to your pup without consulting with your vet. Your veterinarian can prescribe safe medication to help with the pain as needed. Hope your pup feels better soon!

Poor Twinkle! From the pictures, it appears that he does have a full-thickness puncture wound. While bite wounds are the most common causes of these types of punctures, it is also possible that Twinkle sustained an injury from sharp material, such as a fence, or from a ruptured tumor under the skin. It would be ideal to take Twinkle to his vet for further evaluation, because some of these wounds require surgery to assure that the tissue under the skin has not been extensively damaged. Additionally, it is likely that Twinkle will require a course of antibiotics since it is likely that this wound will become infected, if it has not already. Your vet will be able to prescribe pain medication, if necessary, but do not give him human pain medications, as many are unsafe for dogs. Until you can get to the vet, try cleaning the wound with dilute betadine or chlorhexidine antiseptic solutions, taking care to rinse well. Be sure to keep an e-collar (cone) on Twinkle until his vet visit to prevent him from licking the wound, as this will worsen any infection. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It looks like it could be a sebaceous cyst that got infected and ruptured. These are benign but sometimes they do keep opening and become bothersome to the pet until you surgically remove them. That being said, in a dog of this age, I always recommend seeing your vet for a closer inspection and a needle aspirate if needed- just to make sure it’s something benign. For now, I recommend an E-collar for Hank so that he can lick/chew at it. Then clean the wound with some hydrogen peroxide. Best wishes to you and Hank!

I agree with your veterinarian to have that removed and tested. Unfortunately the veterinarian will not know how extensive the removal will be until Appu is sedated and the veterinarian can actually examine the area. You may ask that the veterinarian call you during the procedure to update you on the prognosis. You may also ask the veterinarian if there are injectable medications or liquid medications that can be given if you cannot give your pet tablets. It is best to get this taken care of quickly before it grows any larger. Best of luck.
