My dog is afraid and peeing after I yelled. What should I do?

Many dogs do outgrow this by 1 year of age, but I would also try to alter your behavior around him and decrease yelling as it sounds like it can be upsetting to him and in dogs, yelling is usually not an effective training tool. I would recommend looking into some positive reinforcement training resources such as The Puppy Primer by Patricia McConnell or How to Behave so Your Dog Behaves by Dr. Sophia Yin.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This sounds like fear anxiety. Spend a lot of time counter-conditioning. This means basically re-training him to associate you all with positive things. Treats are the easiest. Sit on the floor and slowly feed him tiny treats. Then reach out to him (palm up, under the chin OR the side/back). Then give treats. Keep slowly doing more and more, giving tiny treats all the while. Eventually he learns “hey, when this person pets me, I get food!”. Also a dog brain that is eating food is much less capable of anxiety and fear. When Curry is completely comfortable with you doing this, start having the younger kids calmly join you and have them offer treats slowly too. Obviously safety is priority so if you need to hold or leash Curry while you do this, please do so. If you’d like this process to go faster and easier, talk to your vet about anti-anxiety medication which can lower the fear threshold and promote this learning. Best of luck to you and Curry!

My heart hurts for this poor dog! It sounds like she is suffering from submissive urination, and this will take time and training to fix. Do not make a big deal when you come home. Come in quietly, greet Abby softly, and let her approach you. If you make a loud noise or rush right over to her, that can lead to the submissive urination. Don't comfort her when she cowers. While you think you are helping her, you are actually teaching her that it's ok to behave this way. Comforting her reinforces the behavior. When people come over, I'd put her in a crate. It needs to be big enough for her to stand up and turn around in. This will give her a safe space of her own. Don't let people approach the crate, give her space. Patience is key in dealing with these dogs, and losing your temper will make the problem worse. Speak to a vet about getting a referral to a professional behavioral expert to help with this problem. This can be a frustrating issue, and can take some time to fix, but if you keep at it hopefully things will improve soon. Positive reinforcement with lots of treats and praise when he urinates/ defecates outside and taking him out more frequently so you catch him before he goes in the house are a good start.

This means that she would probably respond better to you rewarding her positive behavior such as when she does it outside. You can use praise and treats. It is basically focusing on the positive instead of the negative. You will start noticing that she will go outside more and inside less. This works consistently usually. A pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar or DAP plug in diffuser, may help to decrease any anxiety. Do not attempt to pick him up if it causes stress. A leash and collar should be enough to walk him in, out and anywhere else. You may need to reinforce crate training. Provide a crate that is just big enough for him to stand, turn around and lay down. He should be in the crate or on a leash attached to your hip when indoors. Monitor for signs that he needs to go outside. This may include whining, circling or sniffing about. When it is time for him to go outside, take him to a designated area and wait. As soon as he starts to go, say "go potty", "do your business" or any other phrase of your choosing. Praise and reward him every time he goes outside. You can take him for a short walk afterwards as well. Once inside again, he goes in the crate or stays with you on the leash. If you see him preparing to go, take him back out. Thoroughly clean soiled areas using an enzymatic cleaner such as Nature's Miracle.
