My small dog is afraid of the electronic dog door. How to train her?

You could try leaving on a few lights, maybe he doesn't like going out in the dark. I can't think of a good way to teach him to go by himself. You could try just ignoring his request at night and see if he goes outside to potty or starts to potty inside the house.

I certainly sympathize with your situation. My own 2 year old dog is the same way. The key to training him is to expose him to situations that are not too scary for him, but improve his confidence. This is not a quick or easy process, and will need to be continued long term. I have found the best method to be a desensitization and counter-conditioning system. When Max encounters something that is slightly scary for him (not too overhelming at first), ask him to sit or lie down for a treat. The goal is to get him to do something that he is comfortable with and receive a treat (positive reinforcement) for doing that behavior instead of being afraid. Do not give him any reinforcement (verbal or otherwise) for fearful behavior, but try to ignore it. Instead reward the behavior you want to see. It would be a great idea to have a trainer try to help you start this type of training program, so you might ask your vet for a recommendation on a trainer. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Some dogs just do not like other dogs no matter what you do. you can try training and anti-anxiety medications like Prozac from your vet to help any anxiety cause. Then it’s slow desensitization. With the dugs you do short sessions with people touching her. But also realize her walking away from them is better than her biting them. Consider spaying her to help with the dog issues. You can also try a calming collar and treats first. But no drug is going to work without training and effort on your part. I'm sorry to hear that! Unfortunately, I see this fairly commonly - it's one of the main reasons that I don't recommend invisible fences :( I would recommend working with Sophia over the next several days (or weeks, if needed) to help her learn to feel safe again in the yard. You can start by just sitting in the doorway with her and feeding her treats. When she is comfortable and relaxed in the doorway, try taking one step outside - stop and feed her treats there as well. Gradually work your way back out into the yard, step by step, with lots of praise and treats as long as she is comfortable. If she gets nervous or tense at all, just back up to where she was comfortable and start again. It may take quite a bit of time for her to learn to feel safe again, so you will need to be patient. In the meantime, you may need to drive her down the street to another grassy area to potty if she is too afraid to use the yard.

Keep a leash on him and when he attempts to bolt out the door, give the leash a firm tug and tell him a command such as "sit". Have many treats handy and give him a few treats when he listens and sits. If training is not going as planned, you can use an electric collar and whenever he goes near the door, you can apply a low voltage shock to deter the behavior. I hope this helps! The only way to effectively address this problem is to keep Bryanna on a leash whenever you are in doorways until she learns to act appropriately. She must be rewarded and praised for waiting at doorways, and then rewarded and praised more when entering / exiting at the appropriate times. At first, I would make sure she stops at every door for at least a few seconds so she understands precisely it is that she is being rewarded for. Once she begins to understand this, you can start experimenting with the leash off. You should start thinking of a word you want to use that indicates to Bryanna that it is OK for her to proceed. It should be a different command than a the simple "come" or "lets go" that you likely already use for many other situations in life. Hope this helps. Every dog is a little different as I am sure you know. Each will form her own personality, idiosyncratic behaviors, and preferential relationships. With this uniqueness is going to come a certain level of uncertainty in situations like you've described above. Some dogs will forget about something like you've described almost immediately while others seem to take it to the grave. The vast majority fall somewhere in between. I don't know how long it has been already, but the first thing I would do if you have not as of yet is to have the tail examined medically for any sign of continuing pain. If there is, this is going to be a continued reminder for Eva of what has happened to her. Once the pain is controlled, the reason for causing the pain becomes less fresh in their mind (at least that is what I think, some other vets may say I am anthropomorphizing dogs and cats a little more than they deserve). If you are able to determine that pain is not playing a role in the problem, the best you are going to be able to do is prevent the same thing from happening again. Once you feel Eva has healed mentally from this event and is ready, desensitizing her to doors and areas that trigger her anxiety may be in her best interest.
