My new Chihuahua's teeth are loose. Is this normal for the breed?

many chihuahuas lose their front teeth and sometimes even other teeth at a young age, this breed is prone for very bad dentition and it is not considered abnormal. in most cases it does not cause pain and does not cause any problem eating, especially if only the front teeth are the issue.

I'm so sorry that Smokey's teeth seem to be causing him some discomfort. Based on his age, however, this may be completely normal. It is common for dogs to loose their baby canine teeth around 5-6 months, so it sounds like he is right on schedule for having that tooth fall out. You can let him chew on a cold washcloth to see if that helps give him some comfort. You can also soften his food with warm water if he seems reluctant to eat because of his baby teeth. That being said, if it is his adult tooth that is loose, he needs to be seen by your vet as soon as possible. Also, if the baby tooth that is loose is at all discolored or broken, I would take him to your vet as well as it could be infected and could cause damage to the adult tooth. The tooth is likely loose due to severe dental disease. Old chihuahuas commonly have badly diseased teeth and lose many, if not all, of their teeth. Unfortunately, you are not able to do much about this at home. He needs the loose tooth removed by a veterinarian and probably needs some other teeth removed. They can also clean the remaining teeth and help protect them from getting diseased. It also sounds like there is a skin disease. This could be due to an allergy, fleas, mites or infection. It would also be good to have the vet diagnose the skin problem, so he can get the best treatment and finally not have those scabs anymore. Aquaphor is safe for the skin and good for wounds, but could be toxic if ingested, so be careful to not put it on areas of the body that he can lick. I understand that Charlee is allergic to shots (I assume you mean vaccines), but this would not preclude him from getting treatment for his teeth and skin. Any veterinarian should be able to help you with these problems and it's going to be the best thing you can do for him. Dental disease is a painful condition, so I'm sure he'd be much happier with those diseased teeth out and healthy skin.

Chihuahuas can be quite small, and purebred Chihuahuas should not weigh more than 5.9lb. Reese's weight is normal, but it is not normal that all of her teeth haven't come in. She should have had all her adult teeth a long time ago (around 7-8 months of age). It could be she has retained baby teeth that are preventing the adult teeth from coming in, and she will need to see a vet. I would take her into a vet on Monday to get her mouth checked out. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From your picture it appears to be a baby canine tooth. In small breed dogs sometimes the baby teeth can become retained and the puppy doesn’t lose them at all. I recommend removing the baby teeth that haven’t shed on their own when the puppy is spayed or neutered. My thoughts are that at least one Chacha’s baby canine teeth didn’t shed when it was supposed to. It was likely delayed. And it’s a GOOD thing it’s out now. If you are worried have your Vet take a look to see if any more baby teeth are present and discuss removing them at her spay. I hope this helps and have a great day!

No, it isn't normal for a one year old dog to suddenly lose a tooth. It could be a retained baby tooth that just fell out, or Myles could have hurt his tooth causing it to fall out. I would have him seen by a vet. He needs his mouth examined to determine if the root is still present, and it will have to be removed if it is.
