My puppy ingested acetaminophen. Is Tylenol dangerous for my dog?

Hi there! According to my drug handbook, although we don't often use acetaminophen in dogs, the dose would be 170mg on the high end for Bella's size. If she truly ate 1/4 of the 500mg tablet it would be about 125mg, and she should be fine. However, if she ate more than 170mg, overdose is a concern. If Bella were my patient, I would recommend evaluating some lab work to check her red blood cells and liver enzymes just to be sure there aren't any issues developing. The effects of acetaminophen poisoning in dogs are quite serious, often causing non-repairable liver damage. Dogs will typically experience acetaminophen toxicity at over 75 mg per kg body weight - Lady Girl ingested 1000mg and the toxic dose for her would be around 2,200 mg (if she truly is 65#). She may be OK or she may get sick. There is no way to know. At this point you will just have to monitor her and see. The most common symptoms that you may notice in pets suffering from acetaminophen toxicity include: Brownish-gray colored gums Labored breathing Swollen face, neck or limbs Hypothermia (reduced body temperature) Vomiting Jaundice (yellowish color to skin, whites of eyes), due to liver damage Coma If you notice any of those signs you need to get her to a vet right away. If she has a problem with her hock (ankle) you need to get her to a vet for an exam. That way you get a proper diagnosis as to what is actually wrong with her leg and then get a medication made for dogs to help her. Oh dear! I'm afraid that B needs to be seen by an emergency vet immediately. The toxic dose of Tylenol in dogs is considered to be 50-100 mg/kg. If B ate 12 500 mg tablets, this is a total of 6000 mg - with his body weight, this works out to 600 mg/kg, which is far above the amount that can cause serious toxicity issues or even death. I would recommend taking him to your nearest emergency clinic right away for treatment.

Hello. Tylenol can be used in dogs, but you have to be very careful about the dose. We will sometimes use the lowest dose possible for the shortest period of time, but there are much better & safer medications available for dogs. The "diphenhydramine" (or the "P.M. portion of tylenol PM) has a pretty wide spectrum of safety, but the tylenol (acetaminophen) does worry me, depending on the dose Louie may have gotten. We can start to see side effects of tylenol in dogs from 40 mg/kg which would be about 270 mg for Louie's listed body weight. So, depending on the strength of Tyleon PM that you have (many of them contain 500mg of acetaminophen), if he may have eaten even a single tablet, that's enough to warrant a vet visit. Given the possible risk, I recommend bringing Louie right in to the vet. They will likely induce vomiting to get it out of his stomach, or start protective GI medications to minimize his absorption of it, depending on when the exposure occurred.
