What hydrogen peroxide mix is safe for my dog's abscess drain?

If there is a lot of discharge around the incision, you could use a small amount of peroxide or just some warm water to clean the around the area. You don't want to irritate the incision more so don't rub or pick the discharge/scabs. Then apply the spray as directed. If there isn't a lot of discharge than you could just use the spray as directed.

You're right about that! I never tell any clients to clean any surgical site with hydrogen peroxide for that reason. If the surgery was performed under sterile circumstances, you should not have to clean the area with anything post-operatively other than maybe to remove some dried blood that may be adhering to the skin. Additionally, most practices nowadays do not place external sutures during surgeries like neuters. I would find out from your veterinarian why he is making this suggestion for Jax. Until then, I personally would not recommend placing peroxide on the area.

Hydrogen peroxide can work well to clean up organic debris (like dirt or feces), but unfortunately it also can inhibit healing so I do not recommend using it for cleaning wounds. If this is superficial, you could try to use chlorhexidine pads topically. However, if this is a deep wound, that would not be recommended. I do not recommend spraying hydrogen peroxide. I would not recommend hydrogen peroxide, you can use an antibiotic ointment and you will need an e-collar as well. bear in mind there might be a foreign body (usually a grass seed) buried in there which will need to be removed under sedation by your vet.

I don't think that it being hard is normal for an abscess, but this appears to be a very large abscess. You should call your vet to discuss this new finding, as they may have some insight depending on the suspected cause and the exam findings. The purpose of the drains is to allow the fluid to be released as the wound is healing. If they weren't there and the hole your vet created closed up, then all of that fluid would be trapped under the skin and it would re-abscess.

Poor Brew! Since this lesion is waxing and waning in size, and not dramatically worsening or rupturing, an abscess seems less likely. Given the appearance of this lesion and Brew's young age, a benign skin mass like a histiocytoma seems most likely. However, the only surefire way to determine the cause of this lesion is to take him to the vet for an exam and needle aspirate of this lesion so that the cells can be examined microscopically.
