My Pomeranian had 8 puppies. Is this normal? Will she have enough milk?

Eleven puppies is a lot of puppies for a dog to have, and it could be that Pepper doesn't have the milk supply to nurse them properly. Make sure you are feeing her a puppy formulated food that will give her the extra calories, calcium, and protein she needs to feed all eight remaining puppies. Also make sure she has access to plenty of fresh water at all times. You are doing the right thing by bottle feeding the puppies, and I would take Pepper and her puppies into the vet first thing in the morning for an exam.

If you haven't yet, transition her to a quality puppy food. Feed her this diet until she weans the litter then transition slowly back to an adult maintenance diet. Provide plenty of fresh water as well. If necessary, you can supplement the pups with a puppy milk replacer such as Esbilac or Pet Lac. Either may be purchased from your veterinarian or the local Petco.

At 3.5weeks pups would be expected to suckle less frequently but in larger volumes. If she appears unwell or feverish or the pups are crying and hungry you should have her checked by your vet to rule out infections such as mastitis. In some bitches it takes a while to produce milk once the puppies latch on the nipples. When the puppies are about 3 weeks of age, you can start feeding them small amounts of wet food mixed with warm water.

Hello. 8 puppies is a pretty good litter. If Mom seems content caring for her newborns, then I would not be too concerned. It is never a bad idea to have everyone checked in the next couple of days, but there is no hurry to do so as long as puppies are nursing & Louie is eating well. I should mention that with this many puppies, she should be on a puppy food for the extra calories, but no other supplements unless your vet recommends them. 9 pups will take a lot from a mother at any age, they do tend to lose a lot of weight when nursing the puppies. She will gain it back after they are weaned, make sure to feed her as much as she wants and feed her puppy food instead of normal adult food.

This is quite possible. At this stage all the nipples should be big and very full, especially if she only had one puppy. If you think she has not enough milk, you will need to supplement with puppy milk and bottle feed the puppy. Please do not use cow's milk. You can get puppy milk and a feeding bottle at a supermarket or pet store. Do not take him off his mommy, she will do most of the work for you, just add the bottle feeding to his care.
