Why is my Doberman licking her paw? What's causing it and treatment?

This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking.

It appears that Roxie either has a cut on her paw pad or has licked her paw raw. It is possible she is licking her paw secondary to trauma, allergies or even infection. I would recommend taking her to a vet to determine the cause and appropriate treatment. If the paw if infected she might need antibiotics. I would recommend placing her in a cone around her neck to help prevent the licking. You can try an over the counter anti histamine to help with the itchy but that will not resolve an infection.

Common causes include foreign body (splinter), injury, infection (bacterial or fungal) and allergies. Place an e-collar (cone) on Macy to prevent further licking or chewing. Have her examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the underlying cause. If the skin is broken, she is at risk for infection and may require antibiotics.

It's hard to say if Spot started licking the paw because of allergies or a wound. Excessive licking of the paws can cause secondary trauma to the skin and pads. Pads can take 6-8 weeks to completely heal, so preventing licking and protecting the pad is the best treatment. If the skin between the toes is also affected, I would recommend having Spot examined by a a vet to determine if there is an active infection. Allergies can cause paw licking, but it is generally on 2 or 4 feet, so I think it is less likely in this case.

No matter what you use to treat him with, this will not resolve as long as he continues licking. You will need to get him an Elizabethan (cone) collar until the feet are healed. I suggest you try these medicated wipes. If no improvement after treating for 10 days or so then he needs to go back to the vet for some testing. Hi, it looks more like dermatitis. Does Oatmeal lick/chew his paws ? It might be worthy to have him checked over so that he can receive some medication that will promptly make him better.! It is nothing serious but obviously it will cause some discomfort. Hope all goes well.!

If the hot spot is small you can try putting some triple antibiotic ointment on it. You will want to try and prevent your dog from licking the area as much as possible, like with an E-collar, to allow it to heal. If the area is very large and inflamed your dog may benefit from oral antibiotics to help it heal more quickly.
