My diabetic dog is vomiting. What can I give him to help stop it?

Vomiting can be a sign of elevated glucose levels. If your pet has skipped an insulin treatment then this can very well be the reason why she is now sick. It is best to feed her a meal and get her back on her insulin regimen as soon as possible to avoid prolonged high sugar levels that will continue to make her ill. If she is also refraining from eating and continues to act ill, then it is best to get her seen by a vet right away because she may be ketoacidotic (high level of ketones in the body due to excessively high sugar levels in the bloodstream) and in need of emergency treatment to help stabilize her.

If Cinnamon has been vomiting for less than 24 hours and not been vomiting multiple times per hour, then you can try a home remedy to see if that helps with the vomiting before taking her into the vet; otherwise, I would take her into the vet immediately should she be vomiting for more than 24 hours, and/or multiple times per hour. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.

It sounds as Ruby is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. it could also be an imbalance in her diabetes medications. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

It sounds like she experiencing nausea so she may need an anti-nausea medication, like Cerenia, an antacid, and/or a gastrointestinal protectant to help treat. It might also help to put her on a hypoallergenic diet, like z/d or d/d. You could also add a probiotic to her diet and see if that helps. If it continues than you could take her to an internal medicine specialist for an endoscopy and intestinal biopsies to get a definitive diagnosis.

Good call on giving Matilda the cerenia tablet! Hopefully she will keep it down and the vomiting will stop. My assumption is that she's got some gastritis (inflammation of the stomach wall) from overeating a food her body isn't used to. When the stomach wall gets really inflammed there can be bleeding and sometimes ulcerations. However keep in mind that schnauzers can be prone to pancreatitis which can be a lot more complicated than a simple case of gastritis. If the vomiting continues beyond 24 hours I would go see your vet. Once there they can assess Matilda and determine exactly what is going on. Good luck!
