My nursing dog is anemic from worms. Can I deworm her on antibiotics?

Anemia in puppies can be caused by tick born infections and from intestinal parasites. There is also a small chance that a puppy would be born with a bone marrow problem. The doxycycline has a good chance of a cure, but I would highly encourage you to visit with your veterinarian about a broad spectrum deworming protocol to make sure that is addressed as well. Depending on how anemic he is will determine how long he takes to recover. However, if the medication is working you should see improvement within 2 weeks or so. Pyrantel (roundworms, hookworms and whipworms) and Drontal plus (also effective against tapeworms) are safe for nursing female dogs. Intestinal parasites are zoonotic/transmissible to humans by fecal/oral contact so be super diligent about hand washing after handling her or her pups. It is likely that all her pups have worms now too but they should be at least 6 weeks of age before deworming with its pyrantel. Good luck and congrats on the puppies!

Yes, she can nurse the puppies even though she has worms. I would definitely make sure to deworm her ASAP, but it sounds like you're doing that - so it's fine for her to continue nursing in the meantime. You will also need to deworm the puppies starting at two weeks of age.

It is actually recommended that you deworm the nursing bitch and the puppies on the same schedule starting when the puppies are 2 weeks of age; then repeat at 4, 6, and 8 weeks of age and then monthly until 6 months of age. It often takes multiple dewormings to clear them of worms . If you just do it one time you are not likely to make a huge difference. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Those worms are tape worm proglottids. You would have to worm this puppy with a wormer like Drontal plus,however at 7 weeks it is very young to worm with praziquantel (the ingredient in Drontal plus that works against tape worm). The anemia is also likely from the flea infestation. I suggest you take your puppy to your vet for the worming and bring the photos wth the worms/proglottids with you to the vet. The vet will have to assess your puppy to verify that it can be wormed against tape worm. There are some other wormers that can be used, however. it is important to examine the puppy first since it is anemic.

Anemia should be ideally retested. At this stage, with the clinical informations you provided, is mild to moderate and could have been caused only by inflammation. I would recommend to retest the anemia when both the abscess is completely resolved and the course of treatment over. You can give a dewormer even though Lucy is antibiotics. If the worm burden is high enough, it can complicate her condition or delay recovery. Her recovery will depend on how sick she is right now. A mild pneumonia will resolve quicker than a severe infection. Keep her warm, stress free, hydrated and make sure she continues to eat.
