My rescue dog hoards dental chews. How can I save her teeth?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | 18 lbs

My dog is a rescue that was abused or neglected. She had to have seven teeth extracted when I got her. Now I try to give her dental chews, she regards them as a treasure to be hoarded. Instead of enjoying them, she buries them between the cushions of the furniture or outside. I think her previous owners didn't feed her regularly. How can I get her to enjoy the dental chews? She is about five or six and we must save her remaining teeth.

If Sha Sha isn't interested in the chews, switching to other toys such as a Kong that needs to be chewed on to get a treat, or even brushing the teeth with a dog toothbrush and dog-safe toothpaste can help keep the teeth clean. There are also additives that can be sprayed in the mouth or added to the water to help reduce buildup (look for a VOHC seal on these products to know it is veterinary approved). You may also want to try out multiple different brands of dental chews to see if there is one she will eventually eat and chew on as they come in a wide range of choices such as rawhide-like chews, to more bone-like ones.
