Dachshund limping, no injury. What could be wrong and what to do?

Ouch, poor Shorty! He could have a foreign body in his paw such as a grass seed or a foxtail, may have strained a ligament, or could have broken a bone. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. He may have a soft tissue injury (like a sprain/strain of a muscle) or an orthopedic issue (hairline fracture, or arthritis). The best recommendation is to restrict his activity for the next 48 hours - no running, no jumping, no stairs, and leash-walks only. If he still limps after that 48 hour trial, Dexter may need to be seen by a veterinarian for a lameness exam.

Oscar may have injured one of his legs or may have a joint abnormality. It is fairly common for dogs with various joint injuries or arthritis to be more painful when waking and then 'warm out' of the lameness. I would recommend seeing a vet if the limping continues for an exam and potentially some x-rays and/or pain medication.

I'm glad Hazel seems ok now. It's never wrong to restrict activity for a little bit if you suspect a possible injury. But if she is walking and acting fine I suspect she just has a mild strain right then. In general with dashchunds try to limit her jumping- stairs or ramps are great to help protect her back. And any time she may act sore in her back or wobbly get her straight to the vet.

He may have stepped on something sharp or hard that pierced or bruised his pad that you can't see. If he is still limping in the morning, I recommend getting him seen by your vet to determine what happened and how best to treat it.

Rowdy may have suffered a muscle sprain, cruciate ligament tear, or a patella luxation. In order to find out the cause of the lameness you will need to take him to a vet for an exam, which may include xrays and an exam of the knee under sedation to verify presence or absence of the drawer sign which would signify a cruciate ligament injury. He will also need some prescription pain medicine.

Poor Dexter. I'm glad to hear he isn't painful when you manipulate and palpate his leg. He likely has a soft tissue injury like a sprain. These will usually heal on their own with rest.
