Is Cosequin a good alternative to costly Rimadyl for dog joints?

I would be suspicious that the arthritis could be getting worse, however there could also be other possibilities. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. If they think it is the arthritis acting up then they prescribe some additional pain medication. They may also recommend an x-ray to look for other problems such as cancer. Omega 3 fatty acids have been the only supplements actually proven to help with joint inflammation. Glucosamine and MSM don't have a ton of proof but are pretty benign and can be given any way. I personally like Dasaquin or Cosequin.

Please do not give ibuprofen. It can be toxic to dogs and with your cute girl being small I am very concerned about an overdose. Your veterinarian should refill the rimadyl or there are also several generic equivalents than may be less expensive. I would recommend you consider Cosequin or Dasuquin as both cover all the joint supplements such as glucosamine and chondroitin that are great for joint health. Both of these are over the counter. You are usually able to see a marked improvement within weeks to a few months. Best of luck!

When I have patients with arthritis or starting arthritis I always recommend starting a glucosamine supplement. This can be bought over the counter or online. A great animal one is Cosequin. Dasuquin with MSM and Cosequin DS Plus MSM (both by Nutramax Labs) are excellent products. I prefer these because it is the same company that makes the human product, Cosamin, and one of the few companies that submits its products for outside testing to verify ingredients. The GlycoFlex line of products would also be one to consider. These are my own personal recommendations.
