What medical conditions are common for my dog's specific breed?

Syn is a cutie! You are correct that there are common health issues specific to certain breeds of dogs, but that is found in purebred dogs due to inbreeding. She is a mixed breed, so there aren't really any breed specific health issues for her but that doesn't mean she isn't susceptible to health issues such as diabetes, hypothyroidism, or cancer among others. It certainly is possible she could be suffering from hypothyroidism if she is gaining weight, but that's usually occurring in middle aged dogs (4-10 years of age). It could be that she is getting too much food and not enough exercise leading to her weight gain. I would have her seen by a vet for this weight gain. The vet can do blood tests to determine if she is suffering from hypothyroidism, and can treat her if she does have it. If she is medically normal, then the vet can discuss a diet and exercise program for her. I hope this helps!

Endocrine disorders such as diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, and hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing's) are some of the first places I would start. Under-devoloped or suppressed immunity can be some rare things such as bone marrow hypoplasia or a deficiency in specific cell signalling chemicals produced by the body or receptors for those chemicals. I would consider consulting with a specialist. If Hero's primary problem is with his skin, a dermatologist would be the one to see. If other infections are more prevalent, consider seeing an internist. Hope this helps!

No. That is not something recognized or diagnosed in dogs. Many breeds are hyperactive in of themselves as that is what they are bred for. Most dog breeds are bred for a purpose (to work, herd, hunt, etc) and when we take them home and expect them to be a house pet that makes it seem like they are too hyperactive or cannot pay attention. Every dog should have a job and something to do to occupy their minds and give them stimulation. This sounds like you’ve had a lot of medical problems with your last dog. Cruciate disease in small dogs is uncommon. I see it more with ones that also have luxating patellas. Luxating patellas are often genetically passed on so if that is common with her dogs then I would go to another breeder. I expect that isn’t the case. Very active dogs that jump a lot up and down on their hind legs and make fast twisting movements are more prone to tearing the cruciate ligaments. Lymphoma is also uncommon in Westies so again I don’t think I would change breeders due to that in your dog. A very back tick infestation can be fatal, especially if there are paralysis ticks, but 1 tick can just be removed. UTIs can lead to sepsis, or can clear on their own. Kennel cough can clear on it's own or lead to fatal pneumonia. I hope that answers your question. Best of luck!
