Is combining supplements & diet safe for my dog with cancer?

Hello and thank you for your question. The iron may be a problem in this supplement. Additionally, supplements can have interactions with the chemotherapeutic drugs. I recommend to consult with her oncologist before starting any supplements. The oncologist is the expert when it comes to chemotherapy and you always need their input as you don’t want to cause any harm by accident. Hi there. In general, there is no reason that prednisone can't be given with Cosequin DS. As long as the prednisone was prescribed by your veterinarian and you're giving it according to his/her instructions, this should be fine. :)

You are ok going forward with the supplements. Supplements don't have any interactions with medications that you get from your vet, which is why they are ok to sell over the counter. I do hope that Simba's prostate condition is manageable for awhile and that you can keep him comfortable. Consider getting an aspirate of the prostate if you want to know if it is cancerous or not. NOOOOOO!! Please don't give her aspirin or ibuprofen. That is absolutely contraindicated in a dog that is on steroids! You cannot mix steroids (prednisone) and non-steroidals (like aspirin and ibuprofen). This can cause a serious problem (namely GI ulceration that can perforate, liver failure and kidney failure). Non-steroidals will not help at all with cancer anyway; steroids will. If anything, you should talk to your vet about increasing the prednisone dose again. Every 3-5 days is an extremely low dose and is probably not doing anything at all. She needs to be on a very high dose when you are treating cancer. Please call your vet with your concerns and get her back on a higher dose of steroids. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

For this reason, I do not recommend using this as we do not know if it could interact negatively with the chemotherapy. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! As a veterinary oncology veterinarian I can tell you that there is no proven diet for cancer patients. The only supplement that you could potentially add that could have anti-cancer activity but most importantly helps with the skin and joints is fish oil. I would recommend you get the commercial kind online or at your local pet store. Other than that, the best cancer diet is the diet that Jake loves as again there is no diet that has been proven to help with cancer. This is the time to make him happy so I would focus on a diet that he likes regardless of protein, fat or carbohydrate contents. Just make sure it is not too rich as it can upset his belly. I believe I provided you with the answer to this question before regarding the tapering. Now that I know that he is being treated for MCT, I would recommend speaking to your vet regarding the treatment. Prednisone is not generally considering the gold standard treatment for this condition. If he has not offered you a referral to an oncologist, I would request one if you are looking to pursue any other therapies. One of the best therapies available right now for Mast Cell Tumors is a drug called Palladia. I would love to consult with you concerning Hachi's condition including this drug and a possible tapering schedule if you were not clear on the answer I provided you earlier.
