My Shih Tzu has lymphoma. What diet and supplements can help?

I typically recommend using the prescription diet Hills and feeding N/D (neoplasia diet) with any diagnosed cancers. This diet is a proprietary blend of antioxidants and nutritional ingredients to help dogs with cancer especially going through chemotherapy. While there are no anti-cancer foods, medications, or supplements, we recommend keeping pets at an ideal weight and body condition score (BCS), regularly exercising them, and feeding them a consistent diet. Avoiding human foods or very fatty foods can help reduce the risk of developing diseases such as liver disease or pancreatitis. Do not smoke cigarettes around your pet. That being said, cancer in dogs is unpredictable, and can occur even if you do your very best to keep Oscar as healthy as possible. I recommend at least annual check-ups at the veterinarian, and having him evaluated any time you feel that he is not acting himself! Sometimes subtle clinical signs such as hiding, skipping a couple meals, etc, can be signs of underlying disease. I hope this is helpful!

At this point it sounds like she needs a higher amount of calories. There are some food you can try but with her history of the pancreatic cancer component it could cause inflammation of the pancreas. I will discuss with your veterinarian something like hills a/D, recovery diet, are you at Max-Cal diet. Sometimes something like Ensure works as well. Sometimes we also use kitten or puppy food as it has a high calorie counts as well. But again your veterinarian maybe concerned about him on a fat with your dog having pancreatic issues.

I would await her biopsy results (preliminary cytology results should be available within 72hours) before embarking on such as radical diet change in a puppy as many 'cancer' diets are designed to starve the tumour of easily available energy (as well as being enriched with antioxidants etc) which is not necessarily an ideal diet for such a young puppy and tumours are quite rare although not impossible in this age group. In the rare event of a positive result. referral to a specialist oncologist would be recommended with such a young dog

Prescription Royal Canin recovery canned diet is generally palatable (yummy) to even sick or hospitalized cats and is another option as well that your vet can either sell from his/her practice or prescribe. I'm so very sorry to hear about Foofie. There is quite a bit that can be accomplished with holistic options including Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine. I have had quite good luck with mouth tumors with Chinese herbal therapies. But you need to have someone trained in using them in order to get good results. If you think Peaches May have lymphoma you should see your veterinarian as soon as possible. While some people think that a restricted carbohydrate diet could help with cancer there is currently not much evidence to support this theory and there are other therapies like chemotherapy or corticosteroids that are far more likely to help.
