Can contact solution clean a dog's eye ulcer with discharge?

Eye ulcers are very complex and there is no one size fits all treatment. There are many options for treating ulcers and this is in part depends on the underlying cause of the ulcer (poor tear production/quality, inturned eyelids/eyelashes, scratches from other dogs/cats etc). The cornerstone of treatments are a lubricant drop plus an antibiotic drop (each applied 15mins apart every 2-6hours depending on severity), in many cases serum drops (prepared from the patients blood) are also used to promote healing and prevent further inflammation. Surgical treatment may also be required to clear damaged tissue from the surface of the ulcer and sometimes to protect the eye with flaps/contact lenses etc. I recommend a check up by your vet to ensure the most appropriate treatment is selected

Poor Zoey! No, please don't put contact solution in her eye - this will not help to treat the problem, and may burn and cause additional discomfort. Brown or yellow discharge like this is usually a sign of an eye infection, or a corneal injury of some kind such as a scratch or ulcer. I would recommend taking Zoey to the vet today for an exam - he/she can use a special stain to check for any injuries to the eye, and will likely prescribe antibiotic eye drops or ointment to treat the problem.

It sounds like your pet has an eye infection and possible corneal ulcer or scratch. The only thing you can do is wipe the discharge that accumulates under the eye with a cool wet clean cloth to prevent irritation around the eye. Unfortunately there are no over the counter medications available for dogs so you will have to wait until your vet appt for Wuggie to start actual treatment for the eyes. If Wuggie is pawing or scratching at the eyes then an e-collar can be placed on her to prevent further self inflicted irritation.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Brian is under Veterinary care and is receiving antibiotic eye drops prescribed by your vet then the ulcer should heal. Most uncomplicated ulcers heal with in 5-7 days. You should recheck with your Vet to be sure it has healed. I do not think cold air caused the ulcer or will make it worse. Dust, running into branches or other plant material may have caused the original injury so I would leash walk him and don't leave him outdoors long unsupervised until the eye has healed. You can safely use OTC tear gel lubricant for keeping the cornea moist, but it won't cure uveitis or an ulcer or any kind of inflammatory process going on. Sometimes a warm water compress with a clean washcloth is helpful when the eye is painful as well. Angel may have a very painful process like glaucoma going on, so if she continues to be squinty you really need a diagnosis by a vet. Any pharamacist can help you find a gel lubricant for eyes that is sold over-the-counter.

I would use a sterile saline solution to rinse out her eyes. The eye solution used for contacts may contain ingredients that are not safe to use in Toodie's eyes or can irritate them. I hope this helps!
